Donna Van Straten Remmert of Boulder, Colo. passed peacefully in her sleep Feb. 8, 2023. She was 85.
Donna was born April 19, 1937, to Glen Van Straten and Caroline Schwister Van Straten, the third child of seven who grew up in the small village of Black Creek, Wis.
After graduating from Seymour High School, she attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, distinguishing herself with a BS in education. In 1961, she married James Edwin Remmert of St. Louis. While he was fulfilling his Army ROTC obligation, she taught high-school English, speech and drama, directing several plays. She was always loved by her students, including several who remained in touch until her passing.
A whirlwind of corporate moves took her to Chicago, where the couple's first son, David Straten Remmert, was born, and then Houston, where she gave birth to Stephen James Remmert. With her three men in tow, Donna moved to Japan, Chappaqua, N.Y., back to Houston, then to Darien, Conn., where her sons graduated high school.
Then it was back to Houston, where her husband retired, then Austin, Tex., before settling in Boulder, where their son Stephen and his wife Sarah (Kitchener) were raising their beloved granddaughter, Grace. When David moved to Boulder and married Angelyn (Emmons), Donna inherited three new grandchildren, Michael Elizabeth, Conner, and Sophia.
Surrounded by family and an ever-growing circle of friends, Donna published three volumes of memoirs chronicling her younger years and testifying to the free and loving spirit she became. Surrounded by love, she moved gracefully into her elder years and pursued her lifelong passion for dream work and famed psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung. Donna lived a remarkable, rewarding life of travel, thought, and family that she unselfishly shared with all.
She is survived by her husband, sons and grandchildren; brothers Jim and Terry (Vicki); sisters Joan Laffey, Bonnie Babcock, Pat Eick and Marie (Frank) Walsh; and many dear nieces and nephews who were always fond of her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law Pat Van Straten; and brothers-in-law James Laffey, Rodger Roloff, James Babcock and James Eick.
A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 898 14th St, Boulder, 80302, at 10 a.m. Friday, June 16.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Boulder Friends of Jung at boulderfriendsofjung.org, or c/o Rick Taylor, 734 Black Canyon Dr., Estes Park, CO 80517.
