La Verne Van De Wettering, Greenleaf, age 92, surrounded by family, was lovingly sent off to heaven to meet Jesus, her husband, Vitus, and her little Phyllis on January 3, 2023. La Verne was born May 14, 1930 to the late John and Verna (Coffey) Daul in Askeaton, WI.
She married Vitus Van De Wettering on May 2, 1950 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Chilton. Together, La Verne and Vitus raised six children and four foster children. Mom was a great homemaker and cook. Cousins, aunts, uncles, grandkids, and grandparents enjoyed loud family holidays on the farm feasting on mom’s homemade buns, chicken stuffing, rhubarb pie, and Old Black Magic chocolate cake. Mom loved spending time at the cottage in Crivitz, boating and fishing with Vitus and close friends: John and Norma Surin and Stan and Marian Lambie. She also enjoyed socializing with her many friends in card clubs. Mom was a lifelong learner. At age 50, she passed her road test on the first try and became a licensed driver
Mom corresponded with the mother of her foreign exchange student for over 30 years. In preparation for her trip to Chile, she enrolled in Spanish classes at the area technical school and audited a high school foreign language class. Mom loved to plant and tend to her flowers. We remember her making bouquets to decorate the altar at church. She was a devout Catholic, a member of St. Clare’s Parish, and a former member of the Altar Society. Mom taught all of us to pray and to end our nightly prayers with “Little Phyllis, pray for us.” Mom was a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and known affectionately by her great-grandchildren as “Grandma the Great.”
She is survived by her six children: David (Marilyn) Van De Wettering and their two children: Sara (fiancé Ryan Webster) and Mike (Angela); Diane (Dave) Callies and their three children: Nicole (Chris) Peters, Megan (Kevin) Jicha, and Lindsay Callies (Matt Ursitti); Donna (Pete) Jacobson and their son, Tyler (Sara); George Van De Wettering; Marcia Van De Wettering and Jackie Van De Wettering and children: Kris Summers and Nick (Brenda) Summers; great-grandchildren: Veronica Callies, Kyle and Logan Peters, Brooklyn and Devon Summers, Emmett and Isaiah Gehrman, Jack and Cole Jacobson, Tyler and Nathan Jicha; great great-granddaughter, Izzy Young; two brothers: Gene Daul and Dan (Jennifer) Daul; sister-in-law, Myra Daul; foster son, Paul Skenandore; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Vitus; daughter, Phyllis; her parents: John and Verna Daul; mother and father-in-law: George and Jacobina Van De Wettering; a brother, Bob Daul; a sister and brother-in-law: Virginia and Kenny Bastian; three nephews: Mike Bastian, Leon Fink, and Donald Stumpf; a niece, Gina Daul; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Rita and Ves Fink, Tekla and Kenneth Hart, Casilda and Gene Stumpf; foster children: Herman Skenandore, Ronald Skenandore, Don Mignon; and very good friends: John and Norma Surin and Stanley and Marian Lambie.
