Obituary Grace Hoffman

Grace Hoffman passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 19, 2021 at the age of 102. She was born June 2, 1919 in Little Chute to the late John J. and Cora Hammen. She was the third born of nine children, and lived in Little Chute almost all of her life. Grace graduated from St. John High School in 1937, and was employed at Kimberly-Clark for 10 years. On October 8, 1949, she married Dr. Elmer "Doc" Hoffman and together they celebrated 48 years of marriage. He was the love of her life and preceded her in death in 1997.
After the early death of Grace's parents, Grace and Doc opened their home to her younger brothers Gene and Roger until they married, and brother Carl, until his death in 1997. Grace also helped care for her youngest sister, Jane. Though never having had any children of her own, Grace's nurturing nature was evident in the many kindnesses she showed to her family throughout her life.
Grace was a life-long member of St. John Parish in Little Chute, a member of the St. Elizabeth Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Fox Valley Golf Club and the Outagamie County Dental Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling, golfing, bowling, and most of all, the time she spent with her family. Both Grace and Doc also treasured the many winters they spent vacationing together in Arizona.
Grace loved a good game of Scrabble and laughingly couldn't understand why so many of her prized words were not in the official Scrabble dictionary. She was very proud of the fact that she could remember and recite the soliloquy from Shakespeare's Macbeth, a school recitation she had learned over 85 years before. Singing was also a very important part of Grace's life. She loved singing as a child growing up, singing with her family at parties, and later being a member of the Villa Voices choir at the St. Paul Villa. Grace was an excellent cook, with her treasured recipes for strawberry pie, Thanksgiving stuffing, Blind Date Cake, etc. now being shared and enjoyed by so many.
Grace and Doc were known to be very humble people, preferring to stay out of the limelight even when their charitable works were worthy of extraordinary recognition. A legacy of generosity is left behind to be paid forward in the lives of those they have touched.
Grace is survived by one brother, Gordon (Margaret) Hammen, Little Chute; sisters-in-law, Josephine Hammen, Little Chute, and Phyllis Hoffman of Wisconsin Rapids; and brother-in-law, James (Josephine) Hoffman, Menomonee Falls. In addition to many loving nieces and nephews, Grace is further survived by her five Godchildren; Ellen Vanderhyden, Patty Aman, Thomas Hoffman, Karen Bencke and Julie Pesch.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Elmer; brothers, Roger (Betty) Hammen, Eugene Hammen and Carl Hammen; sisters, Barbara (Orville) Bongers, Elizabeth (Joseph) VanThiel, Marian (Harold) Vanden Heuvel and Jane Hammen; brothers-in-law, Lowell (Eunice) Hoffman and Joseph Hoffman; sisters-in-law, Frances (Lloyd) Barrickman, Loyas (Donald) Congdon, Celesta and Loretta Hoffman.
Rest in Peace, Grace. A home with Him awaits you. For 102 years He believed in you but more importantly, you believed in Him.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE CATHOLIC CHURCH (411 Vandenbroek Street, Little Chute) beginning at 9:00 a.m. until time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Ronald Belitz will officiate. Masks are recommended. Committal St. John Cemetery.
To all the caregivers and staff at St. Paul Elder Services, thank you for everything you did for Grace during her years as a resident there. She enjoyed her days at St. Paul, and you truly made it a place for her to call home. The family would also like to thank Dr. Jack Meyer and Dr. Jessica Petersen for the many kindnesses and careful attention shown to Grace over the years. She had a great deal of confidence in your expertise and was grateful to have you looking out for her.
