John Robert Gilson, 92, of Cecil, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015, at his home surrounded by family.

John was born in Shawano on Aug. 5, 1923, the son of the late Earl R. and Gerogianna (Ketter) Gilson. He married Mildred M. Kersten. She preceded John in death.

John served in the US Army during WW II, including the Battle of the Bulge. John helped to start the first phone company in Shawano, built his own home, was a cabinet maker a jack of all trades. a member of St. Martin Catholic Church in Cecil, a member of the Shawano American Legion Post 117, Shawano VFW Post 2723 and the Knights of Columbus.
John was very proud of his Irish heritage. In his free time, he loved fishing and spending time with his family and friends. If you visited, he wouldn’t let you leave without eating.
John is survived by daughter, Mary Jane (Paul White) Hoefs, of Cecil; his son, William R. (Sue) Gilson, of Richfield; a grandchild, Casey Hoefs, of Shawano; sister, Mary Holtz, of Little Suamico; and special friend, Evelyn Wilke, of Sturgeon Bay.
He was preceded in death by wife, Mildred; two brothers, Ralph Gilson in infancy and Patrick Gilson; and a brother-in-law, Donald Holtz
