June Irene (Vandenberg) School of Freedom went to be with Jesus on Monday, March 20th. She was born June 5th, 1932 in West De Pere to the late Nicholas and Gertrude (Vande Hey) Vandenberg. She graduated from West De Pere High School. She married Merlin M. School on October 4th, 1950 son of John and Marie (Gerrits) School, Kaukauna. Merle preceded her in death on October 27th, 2014. They were married 64 years.

June kept busy for many years making wedding cakes and also drove school bus for 25 years. She loved their cottage on Kelly Lake. They also enjoyed their motor home in which they spent their winters in Texas. They visited many states along the way. They also made trips to Hawaii, Germany, and France.

She volunteered for many jobs like ushering and reading at mass at St. Nicholas. She was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 7692, Freedom Auxiliary, Historical Society, Election Judge, Golden Agers, and Widows Group.

June enjoyed living at Country View apartments and made the best of friends there, which made her last months very happy ones. She was a big Brewers fan and didn’t miss watching a game.

Survivors include one sister, Joan Schultz of Minnesota; her children: Ken School of De Pere, Lynn (Tom) Cavey of De Pere, and Lisa (Russ) Bolwerk of Freedom; her grandchildren: Dana Greely of Colorado, Matt (Amie) Greely of Shiocton, Ryan (Taryn) Bolwerk of Appleton, Michael (Liz) Bolwerk of Appleton, Nicole (Shane) Hoover of Milwaukee, Ali (Ian) Nelson of Appleton; two step granddaughters: Hannah and Cayla Cavey; and 11 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Merl, and both of their parents, June was preceded in death by her brother, Douglas (Carol) Vandenberg; her sisters: Zeta (Emery) Mollen, Nicholas Huisman, Isabelle (Gilbert) Vosters, Jean (Ted) Van Dera, Pearl (Roy) Pleshek, Yvonne (Jim) Hoffman, Margie Vandenberg, Bill Schultz, Dorothy (Ervin) Goffard, Rosella (James) Verbeten, and Jackie School.

A visitation for June will be held on Monday, March 27th, 2023 at Verkuilen-Van Deurzen Family Funeral Home Freedom location, N3972 Columbia Ave, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, March 28th, 2023 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, W2037 County Rd. S, Freedom, from 9:00 a.m. until the funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. Mom’s final resting place will be in Highland Memorial Mausoleum beside Merle.
