Dale Owen Rohm October 24, 1945 — July 22, 2023 Greenville

Dale Owen Rohm, 77, called by some “Toby” or “Snowshoes,” passed away peacefully at St Joseph’s Residence in New London. His wish was for God to take him when he was called.

Dale was born to Grant and Doris Rohm in Appleton, WI. In his youth he grew spiritually attending a yearly Baptist camp in Waupaca, Camp Tamarack. He had fond memories of visiting his Aunt Arletta’s home on Lake Winnebago. On weekends he liked playing cribbage with his dad and mostly he enjoyed time hunting and fishing with his brother and best friend Dean.

Dale’s first job was a paper route he bought from his cousin Robert Holcomb; with the purchase came a bike with a small 12” front tire making room for the HUGE basket that carried the daily average of 140 papers. He graduated from Appleton High School and later worked at Elmtree Bakery where he met his wife. Dale retired from PH Glatfelter after 34 years of employment.

Dale married Mary Catherine VanGroll (daughter of John and Martha VanGroll) at St. Thomas Moore on November 5, 1966. Mary, an avid baker, was the perfect match for Dale’s sweet tooth. Together they spent many summers camping in Door County. Dale enjoyed reading the newspaper, bowling, billiards, collecting guns, and 4 card poker. His greatest enjoyment was being an active member of the American Cribbage Congress. Although one might think he was most proud of being an Oneida Gold Card Member or twice getting a perfect 29 hand in cribbage, he believed his biggest accomplishment was marriage and raising two children in a Christian home.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years Mary Rohm; his two children Jason Rohm and Melinda (Terry) Quick; three grandsons Andrew, Grady, Clayton; and siblings Carmen Bolwerk and Lori (Jim) Krueger. Dale is further survived by his sister-in-law law Dar Rohm and Mary’s siblings Marty (Char) VanGroll, Judy VanHandel, and Monica Hanagan (Jim Rademaker) as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Dale loved eating out, especially at the Wisconsin Avenue Diner where the manager Melissa knew just what to bring, hamburger stroganoff and Pepsi. He frequented the concessions stands at many of his grandsons’ sporting events. He never wanted to miss an event and now will be able to watch every game from above.

Dale is preceded in death by his parents; siblings Verda (Melvin) Maynard and Dean (Betty) Rohm; and brother-in-law Jerry Bolwerk. Additional family to precede him in death include Mary’s brothers-in-law Jim VanHandel and Guy Hanagan.

A service for Dale will be held on Thursday, July 27, at 11:00 AM at Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior St, Appleton. Visitation will be held prior from 9:00 AM until the time of service. Family and friends of Dale are encouraged to bring and play card games or cribbage throughout the visitation and luncheon.
