Pettis, Earl Henry
Earl Henry Pettis, 95, Appleton, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Colony Oaks Care Center following a brief illness. He was born April 17, 1914, in Idaho, son of the late Henry and Carrie (Nau) Pettis. He moved to Appleton in 1937. He married Dorothy "Hattie" Van Camp on Oct. 21, 1972, sharing 37 years together. Earl was a Mason/Bricklayer for many companies and worked on many prominent buildings around the state.
Earl served in the Army during World War II with the 34th Field Artillery 9th Division. He was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church, Mackville, Bricklayers and Allied Mason Union #9 for 58 years, Appleton American Legion Post #38.
Earl was well-known as an honest hardworking man with a good sense of humor. His favorite hobbies were fishing and camping in the earlier days with Hattie. He loved crosswords and learned the Internet at age 85. Watching NASCAR and the Packers and playing cribbage were also a source of enjoyment.
Survivors include his wife, Hattie; two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia Biedermann, Seymour; Susan (Larry) Reinke, Shiocton; four sons and daughters-in-law, James (Lori) Pettis, Neenah; Richard (La'mila) Pettis, Nebraska; Frederick (Toni) Ringel, Appleton; John (Carole) Ringle, Appleton; a brother and sister-in-law, Rex (Dorothy) Pettis, Farmington, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Rose Turek, Black Creek; a brother-in-law, Ervin "Farmer" Van Camp, Appleton; ten grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vi; a sister, Ellen Sewell; six brothers, Roy, Harvey, Donley, Ray, Jack and Arthur; three brothers-in-law, Lawrence (Lorraine) Boers, Edward Turek and Alfred (Betty) Van Camp.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at St. Edward Catholic Church, Hwy. 47, Mackville, with the Rev. Charles Brooks and the Rev. Justin Werner officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery. Friends may call directly at the church on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.
A memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the loving caretakers at Colony Oaks.
We will miss you Dad and hold you forever in our hearts. Goodbye my loving husband, though you are not here for me to hold, my love will never end. You are my "Sunshine," Hattie. Walk in God's hands now.
