- Agnes L. Groh, (nicknamed "Paddy" by her father),age 93 passed away peacefully March 13, 2014 at Heartwood Homes in Appleton. She was born the third of seven children to James Sr. and Mary Bruener in Port Edwards, WI. Agnes attended school in Port Edwards, WI, upon graduation from high school she attended Wausau Business College. While in high school she enjoyed music, played the piano, piccolo and performed in the marching band. Agnes enjoyed horseback riding and attended an Equestrian school. After high school, she worked for Nekoosa-Edwards Paper Company where she met the love of her life, Romuald Peter Groh. In 1948 at the age of twenty-eight they married in Port Edwards and began another chapter of life. They then moved to Appleton, WI and built their home. Together they had four children, Michael, Mary Clare, Kathryn and Frank.
Agnes loved to sew and was an accomplished seamstress, making clothes for her girls and encouraged them to sew. She also tatted, which is a unique handcrafting technique for making lace. Her love of the piano influenced all four children in the area of music, with everyone playing an instrument and the piano. Along with raising her family, Agnes also was the administrative assistant to her husband's insurance company and worked alongside him as he developed and managed St. Joseph Cemetery. She enjoyed an active role as secretary/treasurer at St. Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary, as well as St. Joseph Christian Mothers' and Secretary for the Reserved Officers Association. Agnes treasured her family spending many memorable times with them at her home and their second home in Vilas County. Agnes loved making hot chocolate for her grandchildren after a snowmobile ride in the woods, and boating on "The Paddy", her pontoon boat. She would like to be remembered for being three things: sensitive, considerate and private. Agnes was a devout catholic and had been an active member at St. Bernard Catholic Church for many years.
Agnes will be deeply missed and forever loved by her four children Michael A. (Kristan) Groh of Medford Lakes, NJ.; Mary Clare (Michael) Woytych of Waukesha, WI; Kathryn A. (Bruce) Markert of Slinger, WI; and Frank (Renee) Groh of Appleton, WI; sisters Sr. Mary Dominic O.P. Virginia, Julia Haese of Milwaukee, sisters-in-law Charlotte Bruener of Wisconsin Rapids, Dorothy Bruener of Port Edwards, Dorothy Sullivan of Menasha, brothers-in-law Anthony J. (Joan) Groh of Brookfield,Dr. James A. Groh of Grafton, and Robert Ethier of Oak Creek; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and God children.
In addition to her beloved husband Rome, she was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Bruener, brothers James and William Bruener, sisters Helen Ghiloni and Genevieve Ethier; sisters-in-law Helen Peerenboom, Monica Koren, Virginia Groh, brothers-in-law Karl Peerenboom, Joe Koren, Robert Sullivan.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 am on Saturday, March 22, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 W. Pine St., Appleton, with Father Dennis Ryan officiating. Friends may visit at the church on Saturday from 9 am until the time of service. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
