    • Nellie Van Domelen and Jacob Lamers

Nellie Van Domelen and Jacob Lamers were married Nov. 17, 1895 at Little Chute. Their farm was on what is now the corner of Hwy 41 and N; where the Moasis now is.

Born there were: Margaret, William, Henry, Mayme, Elizabeth, Agnes, Richard and John. In 1911 Jacob purchased a farm in the Kimberly area, known as R# 3, Appleton, towards the Appleton city limits. Here in the following years, Arthur, George, Raymond, Wilma and Jacob Jr. were born. Jacob Sr. started a dairy; bottling milk in the basement of the farmhouse. About 1923 Jacob had a new home built on the farm and used the old house as a summer kitchen. I can remember Uncle Jake wearing wood shoes to “ward off rheumatism” from the freshly washed floors in the dairy. We enjoyed going there and “helping” wash the glass milk bottles. After supper the family would gather around and sing accompanied by music furnished by the children. It was “something” to observe. Most of them “played by ear”.

I asked Betty about Bill's drowning in 1917 at the age of 17. She said several of them had gone to visit and play at Uncle Corniel and Aunt Dinah De Bruins whose farm was north of what is now OO “kitty korner” from Van Zeeland's garage and home. Uncle Corniel and Aunt Dinah were visiting at Lamers as Nellie was eight months pregnant with Wilma. Betty said normally they (the kids) walked back and forth but Uncle Corniel came to get them when it was learned that Bill had drowned.

In 1930, Richard Lames bought the dairy from his father and moved it to the then, west edge of town, now 114 S. John St. Today it belongs to Dick Jr. at the same location but with five additions built on to that original one-story building.

After almost 35 years on the farm, Jacob and Nellie sold the farm to Jake Jr. and moved into a home in Kimberly on Willow St. They celebrated their golden wedding in 1945.

Betty said Bill Van Domelen worked on their farm in his younger days. Jake Jr. told me he was born after Maggie wasmarried. Maggie and her mother were both pregnant at the same time. Betty said that at the age of 13, Maggie could take over when the folks had to go someplace-even to baking bread.
