    Notes
    • THE PASSING OF THREE PIONEERS
Within a week three Plymouth pioneers have passed away. Two of them came here when there was little to embellish civilized life. They came when to live here meant hardships, deprivation frequently of the simple necessaries of life. They came to what was scarcely more than a wilderness. They have resided in the city or vicinity ever since, and they did their share in bringing about the better conditions of the present. That these pioneers were all women does not make their share in the things accomplished by the pioneers any the less important.
      MRS. SUSANA VANDERHOOF.
Mrs. Susana Vanderhoof, the wife of the late Peter Vanderhoof, succumbed to diabetes on Saturday, February 1, at her home in this city. She had not been in the enjoyment of her wonted health for weary months and for a number of days preceding her demise she was in a very critical condition.
The funeral was held from the home on Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Mr. Altvater of the Congregational church
officiating. The interment was in what is known as the Grant cemetery north of the city. Her husband and one child also lie buried there. The arrangements were in charge of Undertaker Wittkopp.
Mrs. Vanderhoof, like a number of others who settled in the northern part of the town of Plymouth, was a native of New Jersey, where she was born on February 3, 1836. For many years that portion of the town was known as the Jersey settlement. Mrs. Vanderhoof's maiden name was Suzana Shauger. Her family settled in the town in 1849, only two years after the Vanderhoofs came here. Both Mr. and Mrs. Vanderhoof were born in Rockaway township, Morris county New Jersey. They were married in the town of Plymouth in 1852, the Rev. Himebaugh officiating.
Mrs. Vanderhoof is survived by nine children, one, Mrs. Eldridge, having preceded her parents in death. These are left: Mrs. H. Jones, Mrs. E. R. Henze and Mrs. Ed. Andrews, of this city; Mrs. Mary Eastman, town of Plymouth; Peter and Nathan, Shiocton; Elmer, Oshkosh; Darwin, Lyndon. She is also survived by thirty-two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a brother Andrew Shauger, New London; two sisters, Mrs. E. D. Manning, Muscoda, and Mrs. Sarah Randall, Black Creek.
Mrs. Vanderhoof was one of those kindly disposed persons, whom the immediate family love, and whom neighbors respect and esteem. The writer since her death has heard the remark more than once: "Mrs. Vanderhoof was a kind good woman."
