    • Age 78, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at the Appleton Medical Center, following a five-year battle with cancer. George was born in Kaukauna on August 18, 1922, son of the late George and Mayme (Schultz) Burton. On January 13, 1961, he married the former Dorothy McCormick at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sherwood. George was a 1941 graduate of the Kaukauna High School and for more than forty years was employed by Thilmany Pulp and Paper, where he was a member of the Quarter-Century Club. During World War II, he proudly served in the Army and was stationed in the Philipines and New Guinea. George was a member of the Electric City Post #3319 of the V.F.W. and will be remembered by many from his many years of bartending in Kaukauna. For the past seventeen years, he had bartended for his son at Porgie’s Bar where he always said the fringe benefits were great, but the pay was bad! George was a longtime member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, and was an avid bowler, card player, golfer, and Green Bay Packer fan. He always enjoyed sharing a good story with family and friends. He especially enjoyed the time he was able to spend at his son’s cottage on Archibald Lake.

George is survived by his wife: Dorothy “Smooch” Burton of Kaukauna; three sons: George “Porgie” Burton of Kaukauna; Pat (Bev) McCormick of Belleville, Illinois; Timm (Deb) McCormick of Kaukauna; a daughter: Erin (Rich) Quella of DePere; a daughter-in-law: Diane (Geno) Randerson of Kaukauna; twelve grandchildren: Logan Burton; Sean McCormick; Kelly McCormick and her fiancé Pete; Maureen and Kayla McCormick; Heidi, Holli (George’s Godchild), Ryan, and Robyn Quella; Katie, Maggie, and Michael McCormick; a brother: Jack (Ada) Burton of Kimberly; a sister: Shirley Solomon of Appleton; two sisters-in-law: Ceal Burton of Appleton and Red (Clay) Welhouse of Little Chute. George was preceded in death by his parents, a son Mike McCormick, a brother Robert Burton, and his mother-in-law Agnes Zimmerman.

The funeral liturgy for George will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street in Kaukauna with Fr. Jim Lucas officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4 – 8 PM and again Tuesday at the church from 10 AM until the hour of the liturgy. There will be a parish prayer and scripture service at 7 PM Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in George’s name has been established.

The family would like to thank the many special people who cared for George during his illness. They include the entire medical staff at the Appleton Medical Center, especially those on 4 SW. A very warm thank you is also extended to everyone at Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology – the level of your care was superb, and George could have been in no better hands. Thank you all so very much.
