Powell, Mary Ellen "Marie"
Mary Ellen Powell, age 96, formerly of Kaukauna, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 25, 2009, at Appleton Medical Center. She was born May 9, 1912, in Kaukauna to the late Charles and Irene (Chauveneau) Promer. On December 29, 1936, she was united in marriage to James "Herbert" Powell at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kaukauna where she was a lifelong member. Marie graduated from Kaukauna High School and Outagamie County Teachers College. She devoted her life to taking care of her family and children. Marie was an excellent seamstress and made the best cookies.
She is survived by her husband Herbert to whom she was a devoted wife of 72 years; she was the loving mother to: Rosalie (Dr. Thomas) Hennes, Neenah and Shirley (Roger) Larsen, Appleton; she was "Granny Rea" to: Diane (Kevin) Heimerman, Scott (Bonnie) Hennes, Patrick (Beth) Hennes, Michael Hennes, Gregory Hennes, Brian Larsen, Yvette Verhagen, Renee Seidl, and Laurie Campshure; great grandmother to 14, great great grandmother to ten; two sisters-in-law: Muriel Powell and Doris Powell. She is further survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant twin sister, a sister, Agnes Brech and a brother, Charles Promer, Jr.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 30, 2009, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 309 Desnoyer St., Kaukauna, with Fr. Michael O'Rourke officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Burial will take place in the Parish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Marie's name. The Boettcher Family Funeral Home, Kaukauna, is assisting the family. (920-766-2099)
