- Gertrude "Toots" Smits, 80, 133 S Erie St. De Pere, died Thursday afternoon September 8, 1994 at a local hospital. The daughter of the late Frank and Etta (Leiffoort) Denissen was born November 30, 1913 in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. The former Gertrude Denissen and Marvin S. (Smitty) Smits were married on November 20, 1935 in De Pere and the couple ran Smitty's Tavern in De Pere until retirement in 1977. Mrs. Smits was a very active member and founding member of the Brown County Association for Retarded Citizens. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in De Pere, and the Christian Ladies Society at the Church.
Survivors include her husband Marvin (Smitty) and their children. Carolyn and George Hall, Garden Grove, Calif.; Father Kenneth Smits, Capuchin, Madison; James and Judy Smits, Appleton; Marlene and Terry Geurts, Green Bay; Richard Smits, Green Bay; John and Georgiana Smits, De Pere; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; One brother David and Marilyn Denissen; two sisters, Christine and Edward Wicker, Jeanne and Denis Hendricks, all of De Pere; two sisters-in-law, Marge Denissen, Granada Hills, Calif.; Penny Denissen, Virginia Beach, VA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Clara Trout; three brothers, Mark, Richard and Joseph.
Friends may call at the Cotter Funeral Home, 860 N. Webster Ave., De Pere, from 4:00 until 9:00 p.m. today. Parish Prayer Service 7:30 this evening. On Saturday, friends may call at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 121 S. Superior St. De Pere after 9:30 a.m. until service. Celebrated Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m. Saturday at church with Father Kenneth Smits, Capuchin and Father John H. Harper officiating. Graveside Committal Services will follow the Mass at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brown County Association for Retarded Citizens.
