- Man dies as tractor tips
Shiocton -- A rural Shiocton man was killed when the farm tractor he was driving flipped over backward in a ditch and pinned him as he was leaving a farm field 12 miles northwest of here. The time of the accident was placed at between 3 and 5 a.m.
Dead on arrival at Clintonville Community Hospital was Maurice W. Powell, 41, route 1. According to Outagamie County Coroner Bernard H. Kemps, Powell died either from traumatic asphyxiation or internal chest injuries. Kempas was withholding a ruling pending the results of tests.
Kemps and the county police also withheld a traffic fatality ruling. Both indicated that the accident took place very close to the right-of-way of Birch Road.
Kemps said Powell had left home about 6:30 p.m. to work all night at planting crops for a canning company on 10 acres of the Been Seehager farm along Birch Road, west of the county trunks F and M intersection.
Powell apparently was leaving the field and may have misjudged the ditch, which is about three feet deep, for a level exit. He drove the tractor into the ditch, apparently accelerated up the other side and flipped the tractor over. Powell was found pinned beneath the machine by his son Scott, who was to pick Powell up from work at 5 a.m.
The clintonville rescue squad was summoned and rushed powell to Clintonville Community Hospital, where he was dead on arrival at 6:15 a.m. Kemps believed that Powell was killed almost instantly in the accident.
Powell, who is survived by his widow and five children, was born in Antigo. He was employed as a maintenance man by Aid Association for Lutherans, Appleton, while also doing part-time farm work. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Wichmann Funeral Home, Appleton.
