Van Asten, Cecilia M.
Cecilia "Ceil" Van Asten, 91, Kaukauna, formerly of Little Chute, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009, at St. Paul Home, Kaukauna. She was born October 12, 1917, in Kimberly, the daughter of the late John and Anna DeWildt. On September 16, 1939, Ceil married Martin Vanden Hogen and the marriage was blessed with one child, Donald (deceased). Martin preceded her in death on January 16, 1941.
On February 16, 1943, she was united in marriage a second time to Simon Ebben, and with this union Ceil welcomed five daughters, Elaine (deceased); Eunice (Roger) Verstegen, Oshkosh; Sheila Romenesko, Darboy; Ruth (Thomas) Harp, Appleton; Mary Ann (Jerome) Gehl, Hollandtown; and a son, James (Marilyn) Ebben, Madison. Ceil and Simon were blessed with two more children: a son, Allen (Debbie) Ebben, Winneconne; and a daughter, Elaine Rathsack, Delaware, OH.
Simon preceded her in death on June 22, 1963. On May 23, 1966, Ceil was united in marriage a third time to Arnold Van Asten, who had four children: Gordon (Ramona) Van Asten, Fremont; Donna Van Asten, Kimberly; Jerome (Carol) Van Asten, Darboy; and Yvonne Natrop, Fremont.
In addition to the above-named children, Ceil is survived by 46 grandchildren, 113 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Rita VanderWeyst, Little Chute; brother, Clarence DeWildt, California; sisters-in-law: Inez Ebben, Little Chute; Lucy Vanden Heuvel, Kimberly. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Ceil was preceded in death by three loving husbands: Martin, Simon and Arnold; her son Donald and step-daughter Elaine; great-granddaughter Leah Verstegen; sons-in-law: Marvin Romenesko and Donald Natrop; sisters: Marie Van Dinter, Martha Vanden Heuvel, Regina Gmeiner, Harriet Kons and Agnes Steinhauer; brothers: Sylvester, Frank, Harry and Joseph; sisters-in-law: Gertrude Bloy, Mamie Ebben, Sophia Ebben, Martha Janssen, Katherine Van Zeeland, Justina Bowers, Agnes Ebben, Rose Sanders, Margaret DeWildt, Virginia DeWildt; brothers-in law: Cooney Van Dinter, Frank Vanden Heuvel, Howie Gmeiner, Ervin Steinhauer, Art Kons, Joe Vander Weyst, Ralph Bloy, Wence Vanden Hogen, Peter Ebben, Chris Ebben, Peter Janssen, Bernard Van Zeeland, Chuck Bowers, Edward Ebben and Arthur Ebben.
Ceil lived in Little Chute for 45 years and was a lifetime member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, and then joined St. Mary's Catholic Church after moving to Kaukauna. She served as a volunteer in many capacities in both parishes as well as at the St. Paul Home. Ceil lived a life of service to God, family and friends.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 323 S. Pine St., Little Chute, Friday, February 20, at 5 p.m., with Msgr. James Vanden Hogen and Deacon Vincent DeGroot officiating. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 1 p.m. Friday until the time of the mass. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to: St. Paul Elder Services, St. Paul Hospice, Fr. Bert Ebben's Kenyan Mission Project, or the Ebben Family Scholarship Fund at Edgewood College.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the staff at St. Paul Home for the kindness, love and compassion they showed to her during her later years.
