  • Notes
    • Oscar Joseph Meyer
Oscar Meyer was not a tall man at 5'8", weighing about 160 pounds. He was extremely flatfooted but could walk past men much taller and/or younger. He was born and raised in the Town of Russell in Sheboygan County near the village of St. Anna. He took over the family farm at about age 18 because of the injuries to his father when he was caught in the belt and pulley of a large engine and mangled his legs. He did manage to walk again.
Oscar married a local girl, Alma Freund, who joined him on the Meyer Homestead and farmed there until 1975 when he finally retired. He totally enjoyed working the field with a team of horses. He was very much interested in seeds of all kinds and was in constant contest with neighbors to see who could yield the most from an acre. Oscar took quite a bit of ribbing about the Oscar Mayer Wieners; there was no relation. A large chew of tobacco was an ever present trademark. The tobacco pails that once held Good Old Summertime tobacco were used for anything that needed to be contained. The winter months were busy cutting wood for the next heating season. When felling a tree, he would mark a spot in the snow and would proudly drop the tree on that spot. He was also very proud to plow with the old 10-20 tractor and taught his father to do the same. He had a family of four boys and two girls and very much enjoyed the holidays. Fourth of July would bring out the hand cranked ice cream turner and soda pop and lots of lady cracker firecrackers. Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter would always pull the larger part of the relation together for feasting.
