Van Gompel, Robert J. "Gumps"
Robert Van Gompel, 73, Little Chute, passed away Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at his home with his family by his side following a courageous battle with lung cancer and Alzheimer's. He was born Aug. 6, 1934, in Little Chute, son of Martin and Ardena (Verbeten) Van Gompel. He attended school at St. John's and joined the Army in 1953. He was stationed in Japan and then served in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1956. Bob was a member of the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post #258, Little Chute and the VFW Post #3319, Kaukauna. On July 9, 1968, Bob married his soul mate Lorraine. He worked for Thilmany for 10 years and in 1967, he joined the Village of Little Chute Street Department and was employed there for 30 years.
Bob is survived by his wife, Lorraine; his children, Jackie Wettstein, Peggy Christel, Sue (Roger) Sabel, Hope Van Gompel, David Wettstein and Mike (Gina) Van Gompel; his sisters and brothers, Joan Johnson Seymour, Sharen (Tom) Wolf and Kathy Van Gompel, all of Little Chute; Paul (Kathy) Van Gompel, Medina; Martin (Dace) Van Gompel, Waupaca; sisters-in-law, Carol Pingel, Gresham; Melinda (Gene) Taylor, Bradley, Ill.; Rose Mary (Robert) Deshand, Bourbonnais, Ill.; brothers-in-law, Jack (Stephanie) Eldred, Manitowoc and Roger (Shirley) Eldred, Chilton. Bob is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
During summer months, Bob loved to go to his land in Gresham and during winter months, he loved to go to his home in Winter Haven, Fla.
The family would like to thank Kathy, Terri and Jordan along with Theda Care at Home Hospice for being there when Bob needed them. Thanks to Bev and Leo Decoster for all their help. A thank you to Gretchen, Chris, Hope, Peggy, Nicole and Bill ... we could not have done it without you.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church with Fr. Jim Hablewitz officiating. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Little Chute. Friends may call at the church from 4 p.m. Thursday until the time of the Mass. Military honors will be performed by members of the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post #258 and the VFW Post #3319, Kaukauna at the church following the Mass.
A memorial has been established for the Theda Care at Home Hospice.
