    • Van Handel, Henry P. “Hank” Appleton

      Hank age 86 passed away Thursday November 4, 2004 at his home, with his loving family at his bedside, after a brief battle with cancer. Hank was born on March 15, 1918, son of the late Arnold and Helena (Williamsen) Van Handel in the Town of Vandenbroek, WI. He lived in the Fox Cities all of his life, residing in Appleton, since 1949. He played semi-pro football for 3 years with the Little Chute Flying Dutchmen, Appleton Reds & the Kaukauna Electric City. He was to try out for the Packers with Curly Lambeau, but was called to serve in World War II with the United States Marine Corp. He went overseas to the Pacific. He worked for Neenah Foundry Company for 45 years, working his way up to Plant 2 Superintendent for 13 years. He enjoyed traveling to New Zealand, Australia, St. Barts, FWI, & Alaska, with his wife Leora. He was past Commander of the Appleton VFW, involved in their Boy Scout program. He was the “Onion Man” at the Chili Suppers and still active volunteering at the VFW. He was a lifelong member of St. Therese Catholic Church. He is preceded in death by the mothers of his children; Arlene West, Irene Lofholm and Leora Witthuhn, to whom he was married for 49 years and preceded him in 1998. Hank is also preceded in death by a sister: Mary Van Handel, and 2 brothers, Joseph and Ed Van Handel. He is survived by his children: Dennis (Judie) Van Handel, El Cajon, CA; Nancy Walkowski, Appleton; Susan Seeliger, Appleton; Evelyn (Dave) Fahrbach, Madison; Peggy (Ed) Brin, Fort Lauderdale, FL; Paul (Terri) Van Handel, Appleton; Richard (Anne) Van Handel, Kimberly; William (Susan) Van Handel, Fort Lauderdale, FL; Cindy (Jerry) Slinger, Appleton; and John (Traycee) Van Handel, Appleton. 24 grandchildren: Michael (Daniela), Eric (Andrea), Mark (Andrea), Rick (Barb), Todd (Marlene), Tracy (Gino), Marcia, Jay (Anne), Robert (Kathy), Karrie (Scott), Christy (Michael), Jennifer, Paul, Matthew, Michael, Chad (Rachel), Melissa, Justin, Kasandra, Dawn (Apollo), Christopher, Amanda, Adam and Abbie. 16 Great Grandchildren: Regan, Ryan, Savannah, Shayna, Lindsey, Ariel, Joseph, Lauren, Andy, Kyle, Nick, Hailey, Amber, Brandon, Logan, and Jacob. 2 great great grandchildren: Dante and Makaila. He is further survived by his wife Geraldine Bock Van Handel, residing at St. Paul’s Home, Kaukauna; his brothers and sisters: Josephine, Gertrude, Ted, John and Margaret; a brother in law Richard Witthuhn, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated 10am Monday November 8th, at St. Therese Catholic Church, corner of Wisconsin Ave. and Morrison St. Appleton, with the Rev. William Hoffman officiating. Friends may call on Sunday from 4-7pm at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel. Parish Prayer Service 7pm Sunday at the funeral chapel. Interment will take place at Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Henry P. Van Handel Memorial Fund.
