- Rita M. Kersten, age 87, of Menasha, passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2012, with her family by her side, at Birch Cottage in Appleton. On December 11, 1924, Rita Marie was born the daughter of the late Michael and Clara (Brodzinski) Schedgick in Menasha. Rita was united in marriage to Richard Kersten on September 5, 1942; he preceded her in death on May 9, 1983. She had a passion for helping people volunteering for ADVOCAP, Hospice, and Best Friends and many others. She held offices as President and Chaplain for the American Legion. She had been a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Menasha. Rita enjoyed bible study, gardening, crochet, ceramics, traveling, going on annual camping trips with her family to Chute Pond, playing cards and other games. Rita had a passion for her family and loved spending time with them. Rita also loved giving hugs and had a smile that could light up a room.
Rita will be missed by her loving children: Patricia (Bob) Salzman, Dianna (Greg) Simon, Nancy (Gene) Lenhardt, Gerard (Margaret) Kersten, Mary (William) Schroeder, John A. Kersten (special friend, Cindy Anthony), Joe (Ann) Kersten; daughter-in-law, Louise Kersten; many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sister, Louise (Bob) Ulrich; sisters-in-law, Margaret Schedgick, Helen Baer, Elaine Peotter, Lois Sharenbrock, Margaret Collins; brothers-in-law: Francis and James Kersten; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was also preceded in death by her three sons, John, Michael, and Richard; three daughters: Marilyn, Karin, and Jacqueline; sister, Theresa Coon and two brothers: Chester and Albert Schedgick; many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 9, 2012, at 3:30 pm at Martens-Laemmrich Funeral Home, 312 Milwaukee Street, Menasha. The funeral service will follow at 6:30 pm, with Rev. David Skarsten officiating. Interment will take place at St. John Cemetery, Town of Menasha.
