Arts, John T.
It is with great sadness that the family of John T. Arts announces his passing on Sunday, May 25, 2008, at his home at the age of 84. John was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Holland, son of the late Arnoldus and Anne Mieka (Vande Ryt) Arts. He married the love of his life, Gerada Verkuylen in their home town of Volkel on March 22, 1950. Thereafter John and Gerry immigrated first to Ormstown, Quebec, Canada, for 2 years and on to the United States to Clyde, Mo., and then to Appleton where they have spent most of their 58 years together. John was employed by Gilbert Paper Co. until his retirement. John was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Fox Valley Billiards Club. In his early years, he was an avid soccer player and throughout his life he continued to remain an extreme soccer and Packers fan.
John is the beloved husband of Gerry; and devoted father of nine children, four sons, Arnie (Cheryl), Kaukauna; John, Kimberly; Mike (Brenda), Appleton; and Paul (Lynn), Kimberly; five daughters, Joann (Dan) Mitchler, Kimberly; Mary Arts, Oshkosh; Theresa (Dale Judd) Arts, Middleton; Susan Arts, Green Bay; and Elizabeth (Jim) Erickson, Westfield, Ind.; brothers, Pete (Mary) Arts, Little Chute; and Martin (Drieka) Arts, Holland; five sisters, Anna Van Kessel, Lies (Martin) Vanden Berg, Lina (Theo) Vande Wetering, Jo Dortmans, and Andrea (Leo)Van Esch, all of Holland; brothers-in-law, Gerry Verkuylen, Canada; John (Mien) Australia; Wim (Jo) Verkuylen, Holland; and sisters-in-law, Anne Marie Verkuylen, Holland; Anny Wolters, Little Chute; Toas (Simon) VonDongen, Holland; and Nolda (Frank) Hoefs, Canada. John was a loving grandfather to 18 grandchildren, Bill (Lori) Arts, Angela (Scott) Huebner, Westley Arts, Matt (Alisa) Arts, Chris Arts, Andrew Arts, Laura, Andrea and Rebekah Arts, Austin and Marcus Arts, Stacy Mitchler, Jake Jischke, Aaron Arts-Kottke, Matt (Kim) Judd, Connor, Noah and Dylan Erickson; and four great-grandchildren, Ryan and Mikayla Arts, Emerson Huebner and Faye Judd.
He was preceded in death by Jim Jischke; three brothers, Johan, Antoon and Theo; two sisters, Dora (Theo) Huvenaars; and Riet Arts; sisters-in-law, Sister Johannie Verkuylen; and Grace Verkuylen; and brothers-in-law, Lambert Wolters, Harry Van Kessel and Wim Dortmans.
John was a friend to many and was dedicated to loving his family. He worked hard at keeping his family together and providing for them. John took pride in being an American citizen. He was a blessing in relationships with those he knew and others he met. Along with many hobbies, his passion was soccer and playing billiards with his friends. He was a fun-loving man with a great sense of humor.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 222 E. Fremont St., with Rev. Robert Karuhn officiating. Entombment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. The visitation will held in the Sacred Heart Room at the church on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.
A memorial fund has been established.
