- Families and Quilts
Cornelius and Anna were united in marriage on June 9, 1924, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom, Wisconsin. The marriage was the same date as Grandma and Grandpa Nackers. A breakfast and dinner celebration was held at the home of Joseph and Mary Conrad. Lifetime residents of Little Chute, Wisconsin, they raised 12 children, (7 boys and 5 girls). All of their children live in the Fox Valley area.
Cornelius worked for Walter's Garage as a young boy. Due to an accident with acid, he lost his right eye. He also worked for his father, Herman, on the family owned farm. He later went to work for the Wrightstown Cheese Factory.
Anna was a homemaker, baker, and avid gardener. Canning her harvests occupied much of her time along with caring for her elderly mother, Mary, for six years. After Cornelius passed away in 1966, Anna joined St. John's Catholic Church Mission Club. Here Anna and her fellow parish members worked endlessly to produce the many, many warm and beautiful quilts. Below is a poem given to me from Grandma (Anna) Hietpas along with one of her special quilts.
Warm Thoughts!
Love is a quilt, a quilt is love,
Both love and a quilt should be:
Soft enough to comfort you,
Bright enough to cheer you,
Generous enough to enfold you,
Light enough to let you move freely,
Strong enough to withstand adversity,
Durable enough to last a life time and,
Gladly given from the heart.
My mom has some of the quilts Anna made. One of them is used on my bed in the winter. Anna not only made quilts for St. John's, she also made a quilt for every one of her grandchildren. My grandma Nackers learned to love making quilts just like great grandma Anna did.
