Age 61, Bob passed peacefully Monday morning, May 6, 2002, at Cherry Meadows Hospice, after a one and a half year battle with cancer, 4 days before his 62nd birthday. He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. He followed in the footsteps of his father, Mike, and his grandfather, George, proudly serving on the Appleton Fire Department for 30 years, retiring as Assistant Chief in January 1995. He also worked as many years at Appleton Neon and Sign. Bob was a selfless, compassionate and considerate man who touched the lives of many. He is survived by his wife, Susan M. (Ashauer) Brautigam; a son and daughter-in-law, Brad (a fourth generation firefighter) and Colette Lunday Brautigam, Minneapolis; a daughter and son-in-law, Carey and Mark Hanauer, Shawano; a daughter Gina Brautigam and friend, Adam Rechner, Mill Valley, California; three cherished grandsons, Oscar and Ivan Brautigam and Maxwell Hanauer, due in August. Also his precious mother, Rita (Young) Brautigam; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Dick and Sharon Brautigam, Tom and Bev Brautigam, Mike and Kathy Brautigam and Steve and Marsha Brautigam; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Bud Thein, Ruth and John VanMeter, Carol and Cliff Keating, Nancy and Ron Doering. His sisters-in-law, Judy (Ken) Hocking, Sandy (Jerry) DeBruin, Mary Lou (Pat) Garvey, Jan Ulrich. Also surviving is his aunt, Catherine Stepanski, who held a special place in Bob’s heart and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his father Mike Brautigam, his grandparents, George and Rose (Boehme) Brautigam, Ed and Mary (Weiss) Young, a nephew Greg Brautigam, in-laws, George and Mary (Kettenhofen, Ashauer) Griesbach, his stepfather-in-law, Norbert Griesbach and a nephew Dennis Garvey. The mass and celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, May 11, 2002, at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 312 South State Street, Appleton, with Father Michael K. O’Rourke officiating. Friends may call directly at the church from 9:00 am, Saturday, until the time of the mass. The family requests all to share their fond memories in writing, for a scrapbook for his children and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established.

The family would like to thank Drs. Bar-Lev and Reinke and their wonderful staff at the Martha Seikman Cancer Center and the staff at Cherry Meadows, especially Barb, Lou, Sandi, and Debbie from Theda Care at Home Hospice, for helping us through this difficult time.

“My husband and best friend, I will love you forever. I’m so blessed that you chose me to be your wife and mother of your children.” Sue
