      Kasten, Leslie Little Chute

Les was born to the late Herman and Marie (Schuester nee Ardnt) on June 6, 1916. He had the warmth of mother's love until the age of 14 when she tragically passed away during the influenza epidemic of 1930. He grew up with his sisters and brothers in Sherwood on Great-grandpa Herman's farm. When he was old enough he joined the 4H and enjoyed that immensely.

He raised a beautiful horse and also played saxophone in the 4H band. 4H was a big part of his young life and he stayed in it until 17 or 18. When he was about 22 he met LaVerne Mader and they were married on Sept. 16, 1939. Together Les and LaVerne raised 7 children. They lived with his father and step-mother, Bertha, for awhile and eventually bought a farm of their own in Stockbridge. After farming that for a while, they bought the Mader home place and he farmed there for many years. In the mid '50s he decided to take on a mill job to supplement the family income and worked at John Strange Carton Co. in Menasha until retiring at the age of 65. He and LaVerne also ran the old Lake Park Tavern for 5 years. Besides loving his wife and family, Les had two other loves, his ford tractor and his accordion. In fact a picture of his tractor has been etched into the head stone he and LaVerne share. Les was a sweet and sensitive man and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his seven children: Glenn (Sandy) Kasten, Bonnie (Carl) Vanden Heuvel, Les Jr. and (Lorna) Kasten, Donnie (Rose) Kasten, Sandy (Tom) Van Thiel, Peggy (Dick) Van Asten, and Lori (special friend Keith Kowalski) Londre. He has 21 grandchildren: Kay (Terry) Sheedlo, Danny Kasten, Kristy Kasten, Vicky Jesko, John (Trish) Vanden Heuvel, Jeff (Debbie) Vanden Heuvel, Rick (Jackie) Vanden Heuvel, Lee Kasten, Kraig (Tammy) Kasten, Jenny (Dan) Boettcher, Missy (Brian) Ahrens, Dawn Kasten, Cody (Lynette) Kasten, Stacy Verstegen, Angela Kasten, Shelly (Ben) Pohlman, Steve (Brooklyn) Van Thiel, Lisa (Tyler) Romenesko, Brian Van Asten, Brielle Londre and Paris Londre; 35 great-grand children and five great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Lenord (Boyce and Arlene) Kasten; sister-in-law: Linda (Lawrence) Mader, Don (Phyllis) Mader, and Flo (Bob) Mader. Also many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVerne nee Mader his wife of 64 years; his parents; a brother, Clarence Kasten; sisters: Toots (Leo, also deceased) Mader and Florence (Henry also deceased) Moeller; and in-laws: Ralph and Marie Mader, Cyril and Elenore Mader, Jack and Helen Mader, Arlen and LaVerne Mader, and Bob Mader.

Les's Funeral Service is at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 8, 2006, at the BOETTCHER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2401 Fieldcrest Drive, Kaukauna, with Fr. Donald Zuleger officiating. Friends will be received at the Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. and again on Friday at the Funeral Home from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will take place at Holy Angles Cemetery in Darboy immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established. 920-766-2099.
