Halbach, Ethel L.
Ethel L. Halbach, of Kaukauna, formerly of the Town of Harrison, age 78, died Monday, January 12, 2009, at home, surrounded by her family. She was born in the Town of Harrison on December 21, 1930, to the late Adolph and Anna (Berghuis) Otte. Ethel married Donald Halbach on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1952, at St. Therese Parish in Appleton. Together they ran Hi-Way 55 Auto Sales, south of Kaukauna for 48 years.
Ethel was a prayerful and devoted Catholic who was a charter member of St. Aloysius Parish. She enjoyed her retreats at Monte Alverno and volunteering in nursing homes, Catholic schools and most recently at the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in Kaukauna. She kept a meticulous house and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, sewing and cooking. Sundays were always a special day for spending time enjoying the grandchildren, whether at home or the cottage up north. She was proud to carry on the tradition of the Christmas Cherry Tree with her family. Ethel worked at St. Paul Home until her retirement in 2006.
Ethel is survived by her husband of 56 years, Donald; three daughters: Susan (Marty) Schuh, Kaukauna; Sandra (Rick) Bruecker, Greenleaf; and Debra (Perry) Kohne, Alaska; one son, Fred (Mikki), Kaukauna; 12 grandchildren: Ben (fiancee Joy) Schuh, Josh (Bobbi) Schuh-Fulcer, Jason (Becky) and Jeremy Bruecker, Samantha (Kevin) Miller, David (fiancee Katie) and Adam Kohne, Alexandria, Wyatt, Elliot and Lucas Halbach; great-grandchildren: Alexis, Hannah and Benjamin; sisters: Lorraine Van Handel and Therese Otte; and sister-in-law: Frances Otte. She is also survived by her husband Donald's family: Bill (Joyce), Alphonse, Eugene, Sister Margaret Mary and Raymond (Marilyn) Halbach, Jeanette Ott, Rosemary (Norb) Propson, Mary Ann (Neil) Olson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, Ethel was preceded in death by her grandson, Nathaniel; brothers and sisters and their spouses: Emma (Clarence) Jansen, Margaret (Gordon) Van De Hey, James Otte, infant brother George and Ed Van Handel; her father and mother-in-law, Raymond and Mary Halbach; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Ceil (Adrian) Mader, James, Gerald, Myrtle and Joan Halbach, and Leo Ott.
Visitation will be held Saturday January 17, 2009, at ST. KATHARINE DREXEL PARISH ST. ALOYSIUS SITE (2401 Main Ave., Kaukauna) beginning at 9 a.m. until time of Mass at 11 a.m. Fr. Jerry Pastors will officiate. Fr. John Hephner will concelebrate. The committal service will be held in the spring at St. Mary Cemetery, Kaukauna.
The family would like to thank Tammy, the hospice nurse, and the hospice staff, the staff of St. Elizabeth Hospital and all those who offered their prayers and support.
