      McGinnis, Alice E.


      Alice E. McGinnis, age 98, of Appleton, died on Monday, November 23, 2009, at her home. Alice was born on January 20, 1911, in Appleton, to the late Martin and Christine (Neiland) Smits. She married James Vernon McGinnis on November 22, 1935, in Appleton; he preceded her in death on November 8, 1981.

      Survivors include her sons: James V. (MaryJane) McGinnis; Bill (Margaret) McGinnis; and Frank McGinnis; all of Appleton; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her sister-in-law, Rose Smits and her nieces and nephews.

      She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters: George, Marie Smits, Dorothy Verkuilen, Lida McGinnis, Harriet Kositzke, Clarence, Harry, Anna Shriver and Joseph; and her great-grandson, Benjamin.

      Alice was well known for her love of providing meals to family and friends. She was also the supervisor of the card games at the VFW for 35 years, the proceeds of which were donated to the American Cancer Society.

      The Funeral Liturgy will be at 11 a.m. Friday, November 27, 2009, at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 312 S. State Street, Appleton, with Fr. Michael K. O'Rourke officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery.

      The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. James Haine; the staff at Affinity Hospice, especially Tammy and Susan; and her personal caregivers Trisha, Angela and Judy; for their loving care.
