    • Raymond Joseph Vandenberg . "Bicycle Ray" Appleton Age 64, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 11, 2000, surrounded by his loving wife and daughters as he peacefully surrendered. Ray was born on December 8, 1935, in Combined Locks, the son of the late Harry and Mary (West) Vandenberg and has lived in Appleton most of his life. He was united in marriage to Kay Bartman on July 18, 1970. He was employed by the Kroger Company for 16 years. He then spent 30 years working at Riverside Paper Company, retiring in 1998. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S.

      Army from 1958 to 1960. Ray will be remembered as a faithful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He loved people and had a passion for bicycles repairing, refurbishing, buying, selling, trading, riding and restoring, especially balloon tire bikes. He touched many people in his life and continues to touch people through his passing by donating his organs to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Allograft Resources Inc. Survivors include his wife, Kay two daughters, Julie (Jerry) Shoup, Prentice Jessica (Marty) Nussbaum, Appleton two grandsons, Teague and Tristan Shoup, Prentice four brothers, Elmer (Agnes) Harvey (Barb) Al (Beverly) Vandenberg, all of Appleton Floyd (LaVern) Vandenberg, Little Chute four sisters, Delores (Earl) Walker Rita (Allan) Laux, both of Appleton Lucille (Charles) Post, Stevens Point Agnes (Bernard) Merline, De Pere four sisters-in-law, Sally Vandenberg, Winchester Lucy and Frieda Vandenberg, both of Appleton Florence Vandenberg, Florida. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his five brothers, Ambrose, Arthur, Paul, Henry and Richard. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, 2000, at the funeral home with the Reverend Daniel Spina and the Reverend Robert Vandenberg officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 p.m. until the time of services. A memorial fund is being established in his name. WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME 537 N.
