    • Appleton - John W. Hakkert, age 83, passed away peacefully into the arms of his Savior on June 21, 2019 at his home. He was born in Kimberly on January 26, 1936 to the late Leonard and Gertrude (Schook) Hakkert. John married MaryAnn T. Van Rossum on June 12, 1965. Together they shared 54 years of marriage. They were always there for each other and always had a strong faith and belief in God: God will always be there for them.

John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He had a passion for being outside, whether that was riding his bike, golfing, or just relaxing; and later in life walking using his walker. John was an avid Cub fan and lived long enough to see them win the 2016 World Series. He loved all sports, especially high school sports.

John is survived by his loving wife, MaryAnn, Appleton; son Dan (Cindy) Hakkert, Chilton; daughter Karla Hakkert, Neenah; two grandsons: Alex and Colin Hakkert, Chilton; and brother-in-law Bob Polakowski, Appleton. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters: Lena, Chris, Minnie, and Jackie; and a brother Jake.

A funeral service will take place at 2 pm on Thursday, June 27th, at the Brettschneider Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Thursday from 1 pm until 1:45 pm. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to Calumet County Home Health and Hospice, especially Amanda and Holly. Also Dr. Forte and Dr. Erdman. Also, a special thank you to neighbors Mary and Bill, Al and Gerry and Barb.
