- Arthur J. Campbell, age 90, of Hilbert, died on Saturday, January 8, 2011, at his home in Hilbert. He was born June 20, 1920, in Hilbert, son of the late Walter and Isabelle (Ruffing) Campbell. He married Alvina M. Zahringer on November 12, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sherwood.
Art devoted his life to farming with his family. He loved planting and growing; he was always so proud of his trees, gardens, and lush green lawn that surrounded the Campbell Homestead since 1878. Art was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hilbert where he sang in the choir for 55 years. He was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Men's Club. Art enjoyed cheering for the Green Bay Packers, reading and dancing; he and Alvina enjoyed many dances together whether they were in a dance hall, or just around the kitchen table. He was gifted with a fantastic business sense, and an incredible memory. Art was always able to recall important dates in his family's history, make informed and accurate business decisions for his farm, and call to mind the exact time and date when he had last visited with someone. Art made sure to visit with his friends as often as possible. He loved to share stories of his upbringing and times he shared with those he loved. Art was proud of his life; proud of his Catholic faith, proud of his Irish heritage, and extremely proud of his family. He was a patient and disciplined individual who was truly an inspiration to those that knew him.
Survivors include his wife: Alvina; eight children: James (Deborah) Campbell of Menasha, Thomas (Marlene) Campbell of Darboy, Steve (Crystal) Campbell of Appleton, Joe (Cynthia) Campbell of Hilbert, John (Joyce) Campbell of Kiel, Karen (Rick) Hertel of Neenah, Mike (Shelley) Campbell of Menasha, Lynn (Bill) Hertel of Grafton; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister: Marie Fassbender of Kaukauna; a brother: Leo (Angela) Campbell of Hilbert; and two brothers-in-law: Clarence Zahringer of Sherwood, and Irvin Zahringer of Menasha.
