Schmalz, Betty Ann Mrs. Kenneth R. Schmalz (nee Wismans)
Betty Ann Schmalz, age 86, of Appleton, died on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at Parkside Care Center in Little Chute. Betty was born on March 30, 1923, in Kimberly, daughter of the late Martin and Theodora (Lemmers) Wismans. Betty attended Kimberly High School. On February 14, 1944, she was united in marriage to Kenneth R. Schmalz at Holy Name Catholic Church in Kimberly. In the early years of marriage, Betty and Ken lived on various United States military bases that he was stationed at while serving in World War II. Following the war, they lived in Madison while Ken completed college; they began their family there. In 1949, they moved back to the Valley and settled in Darboy. Together they founded three successful businesses: Schmalz Custom Landscaping, Ken R. Schmalz Land Surveying, and the Ken Schmalz Orchestra. Mom played an active role in the businesses as the bookkeeper, organizer, and Ken's right hand helper. She worked hard her whole life as Ken's wife and business partner, raising seven children and being a homemaker. Betty very much loved her family, and she was loved and treasured in return.
Betty was an active member in Holy Spirit Parish at Holy Angels Church in Darboy. She was active in Christian Mothers, St. Anne Altar Society, and the Women's Auxiliary for the American Legion. Her special interests were knitting, needlepoint, playing cards, and she was avid Packer Fan never missing a game.
She is survived by her seven children: Paul (Mary) Schmalz, Knoxville, TN; David (Carol) Schmalz, Darboy; Mary (Mark) Kneepkens, Wauwatosa, WI; Mark (Vickie) Schmalz, Appleton; Ann (Jeffrey) Williams, Appleton; Rita (Michael) Wildenberg, Kimberly; and Luke (Donna) Schmalz, Darboy; 18 grandchildren: Eric (Rachel) Schmalz, John (Amor) Schmalz, Alex (Jennifer) Schmalz, Katherine (Zach) Espinosa, Kristina (Matt) Ansley, Angela (Matt) Moore, Michael Kneepkens, Christopher (Ashley) Schmalz, Benjamin (Cassie) Schmalz, Jacqueline (Jose) Smedberg, Joseph (Kristin) Jaloszynski, Andrew (special friend Erin Kuehl) Jaloszynski, Luke Wildenberg, Magie (special friend Steve Lenz) Wildenberg, Thomas Wildenberg, Natalie Wildenberg, Nicholas (Katie) Schmalz, and Kenneth R. Schmalz II; two step-grandchildren: Katie (Nate) Donaldson and Benjamin (special friend Alissa Cottrill) Williams; eight great-grandchildren: Lauren and Katherine Schmalz, Aiden and Bella Schmalz, Addison and Elliott Ansley, Jenna Rose Smedberg, and Mason Wildenberg. Betty is further survived by a brother, Clifford Wismans; a sister, Mary Ann Jones; a brother-in-law, Peter Schmalz; sisters-in-law: Bonita Bodway, Helen Krazniewski, Liz Wisner, Marie Schmalz, and Jenny Schmalz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth R. Schmalz; two brothers: Joseph and Paul Wismans; a sister, Dorothy Hersant; and a granddaughter, Mary Schmalz.
In accordance with Betty's wishes a private funeral mass will be held for immediate family only.
Betty's family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Parkside Care Center of their loving car of mom during her ten month stay in their facility.
Mom, we miss you, and we all love you very much. We will celebrate your life on your birthday March 30, wish you could still be with us.
