Joseph Stein

Name Joseph Stein - Frances Gesatus Stein, whom you are calling Francisca Angelina Jakeras Stein, was my great aunt. Considerable of your information about her is correct, but not that concerning her father, Augustus Gesatus. I've been researching family history for 50 years and have never come across the name Jakeras. I believe her name should be changed here to Frances (or Franceska) Gesatus Stein.
Frances' mother, Katherina Pastifsky, lost her husband shortly before she embarked on her journey to America. Mr. Pastifsky apparently was not the biological father of Frances. Her father was August Gesatus, who was Katharina's companion on the transAtlantic journey. Whether or not they ever married is unclear. Her Wisconsin Death Record has her as Gesatus. She and the children were all listed as Gesatus on the ship manifest. (Likely Katherina needed a sponsor or "husband" in order to emigrate seeing that she had 5 children. One child, a girl, apparently died on the voyage to America.) Upon reaching Darboy, August Gesatus soon abandoned Katharina and the children. The "Wisconsin Births and Christenings 1826-1926" lists her as Franciske Gesatus" with her father's name: August; mother's name not listed. Augustus Gesatus later married a woman (also) named Katherine. August Gesatus was born May 1843 in Poland and died abt 1927 Findagrave memorial spelling Gesatis 11487927).
Incidentally, the "adoptive father" of Frances, Joseph Stein, had been dead for two years already when Frances was adopted by his widow, my great grandmother, Susan Stein. The local pastor at Holy Angels Church in Darboy brought the five orphaned children to Sunday Mass and they were parceled out to five parish families.
