Mullen, Richard J. Richard J. Mullen, Formerly of Appleton, 89, died Saturday, November 18, 2006, at Brewster Village. Richard was born in Appleton in 1916, to the late Christopher and Mary (Malone) Mullen. He married and raised six children in Appleton. He was an electrical engineer who began his career during WWII working on military projects in Alaska and Las Alamos. Dick returned to Appleton to start an electrical contracting company, Mullen Electric, wiring hospitals, schools and other commercial projects. As a local entrepreneur, he also started a telephone and electrical utility construction business that developed the static cable plow used to bury more than 7,000 miles of telephone cables across the nation. Dick went on to work as an electrical engineer on some of the largest projects in the world including steel mills and power generating facilities in Vietnam (during the war), Turkey, Ohio, Massachusetts and Venezuela. He retired in 1980, to homes in Legend Lake, Wis., and Southern California.
Richard is survived by five children, Mike, Fort Lauderdale; Dick, Antigo; Charlie, Suamico; Joe, Colorado Springs; and Sue, Appleton; 14 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his 3rd wife, Evelyn Wronka.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Christopher and Mary Mullen; his twin brother, CJ (Jim) Mullen; and sister, Alice Kamps; son, Donald; and grandson, Christopher; first wife, Leona (West); and second wife, Patricia Cunningham.
A funeral service will be held 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21, at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Michael O'Rourke officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 3:30 p.m. until the time of service.
