- John A. Bergman, 63, Appleton, died about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday following a long illness.
A former Appleton Ninth ward alderman and a veteran employee of the Appleton Post-Crescent, he was a former president of the Outagamie County deputy sheriffs association.
Bergman was born June 12, 1891, at Kaukauna, and lived in Appleton most of his life. He was elected to Appleton's common council in April, 1945. He served on various council committees until 1947., was out of office until 1951, and then was re-elected and served two full terms through April 1955.
He was married to Bertha Stiren, mother of Robert, Ruth & Harold. She died in 1925.
He was married to Petronella Gerrits on June 6, 1927. She died Dec. 19, 1931.
He then married Alvina Vanderloop on Jan. 2, 1933 at Hollandtown. She survives along with two daughters, Mrs. Edward B. Murphy and Miss Mary Bergman, both of Appleton; three sons, Harold P., Appleton, Father Warren, OFM., Cap., St. Bonaventura, Detroit, Mich., and Robert Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two brothers, Peter, Kaukauna, and Henry, Green Bay; two sisters, Mrs. John Ludwig, Appleton and Mrs. Henry Bongers, Little Chute; and five grandchildren.
