    • MARY OUDENHOVEN WEST, born May 25, 1895 and died March 31, 1978. She was the
oldest in her family and had worked in the cheese factory. About 1914 she
purchased a camera, many of the negatives of the pictures she took are still
available. These pmctures give us some idea of her early life. She worked for
a time for Dr. Marshall, who lived on North St. opposite of the City Park.
An early beau was a man by the name of Leakey, who lived near Darboy. She had
many friends that she vis ted with her children. Each summer she took them by
train to Manitowoc, and also to Green Bay to vist a friend by the name of
Sparrow. She lost two of her children, Ruth who was botn June 20, 1926 and
died May 5, 1927. Ruth had a defective heart and was known as a blue baby.
Lucille born July 24, 1920 and died Oct. 15, 1928. Lucille was a happy chubby
girl and became sick, it was thought she had a stomach ache. She must have
been in alot of pain, because when she was brought to a doctor it was found
out she had a bursted appendix. Mrs. West became quite ill about this time
and was operated on by Dr. Dehene. After the operation she had tubes that werE
draining fluid from her. She said the doctor was humming "Oh DEm Golden
Slippers' because of the color of the drainage. This is one of the songs that
her son Al played at a piano recital. She was very religious and made sure her
children attended mass and knew their cathacism. After the move to the Volkmar
house in about 1929 there were two occasions where she showed great courage,
both were fires. Cooking was done on a gas stove, it operated much like a
Coleman lanter. It was first necessary to heat the generator by burning gas.
After it was heated you could open the valve to light the burner. Sometimes
it was necessary to take the generator apart to clean it, this had been done
but all the gas lines had not been reconnected, when the gas was turned on
raw gas shot out and caught on fire. Some how she turned the gas off, she got
burned, but not badly. The other fire was in the down stairs closet in their
bedroom. The fire was burning pretty strong when she became aware of it. She
got a pitch fork and threw the burning clothes out the window. She saved the
house from burning down. There were few happy times from the 1930's §TI. About
1937 there were a few trips to Roberts Lake for fisking. On their Silver
Wedding anniversary there was a party held at the Eagles Hall. In 1947 things
were so bad she left for awhile. She spent some time with Al who was traveling
and at the time was in Ja~ksonville 11., she also spent some time with Jim in
Detroit. After the seperation and the house was sold she lived in a number of
places, a house on Lincoln St., apartmaentson Morrison St., on Wisconsin Ave.
across from St. Tresesas, at Leonas and above Ferrons Mens Store on Coll~~e
Ave. Mrs West had a very difficult time always in fear of her abusive husband.
She loved to travel and visted her children in Florida, Mass., Ohio,Ky. and
Ill. she also vis ted Europe with her son Jim.
