Mary was born on March 1, 1930 in Roy, OR. She was one of eight children born to George and Mary (Vandervelden) Vandehey. She was raised on the family farm in Roy, OR. Mary learned to work hard on the farm along with her siblings whether it was picking berries or performing house chores. Mary attended St Francis Grade School and graduated from Banks High School with the Class of 1948. Following high school, Mary moved to Portland and attended one year at Marylhurst College. She was employed at Iron Fireman where she made gyros for the department of defense.
She met her future husband; John T. Bral while attending a dinner at her parent's home. They soon began dating and after a two year courtship they were married on July 28, 1953 at St Francis Catholic Church in Roy, OR. Following their marriage they made their home in North Plains and settled in their current home in 1962. John passed away on Ash Wednesday, March 4, 1992. Mary continued to live in her home until her death.
Mary was a loving mother to her six children and a devoted house wife. Mary was always an active part of her children's upbringing even to home schooling her younger children. She was a very active part of the parish and contributor to its many events. Mary was "ahead of her times" in diet an dnutrition insisting on making her family healthy homemade recipes which included breads, juices, fresh garden vegetables and cakes, some of which had a suspicious green hue. She had a green thumb and immensely enjoyed her flower garden and large vegetable garden. In the winter when she was away from her gardening, Mary would oil paint, quilt, sew and cook. Mary loved to welcome her nieces, nephews and grandchildren into her home where they learned skills and had memorable adventures.. Even though Mary couldn't sing she was a self taught piano player and she took pleasure encouraging her children and grandchildren to grow in their singing abilities. Mary didn't travel a lot but the trips to Italy to see her two children; Fr. Steven and Sr. Stefana were important events for her; seeing the foundations of her faith and sharing it with her family.
