- Raymond Herman Hertel, a retired farmer who later helped develop work for St. Vincent de Paul, died Oct. 9, 1996, in Hillsboro at age 84.
A funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in St. Matthew Catholic Church of Hillsboro, where he had been active since 1935.
Mr. Hertel was born Aug. 11, 1912, in Roberts, Idaho, but moved to Portland when he was 9. He attended St. Francis Grade School in Roy and Mount Angel High School and graduated from Hillsboro High School.
He married Agnes Vandehey in 1935. They farmed on River Road and then on Hornecker Road beginning in 1942. He retired in 1972. He began a second occupation with the St. Matthew Conference of St. Vincent de Paul Society in Hillsboro. He helped build up the conference's work in food service and furniture restoration.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Phil of Tualatin, and Dick and Al, both of Hillsboro; daughters, Barbara Hertel and Marilyn Doeleman, both of Hillsboro; Sister Catherine Hertel of Beaverton, Sister Anna Hertel of North Bend, Dorothy Hertel of Kenosha, Wis., Rita Waibel of Cornelius, Joan Stieger of Corvallis, Grace Link of Portland, and Mary Heesaker of Banks; brothers, Francis and Joe, both of Roy; sisters, Gertrude Duyck of Hillsboro, Sister Bernice Marie Hertel of Beaverton, and Helen Fessler of Portland; 43 grandchidren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Roy. The family suggests remembrances to the St. Matthew Conference of St. Vincent de Paul Society in Hillsboro, or the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon. Arrangements are by Donelson, Sewell & Mathews Mortuary.
