      Robert "Bob" George Vandomelen

      Robert “Bob” George VanDomelen, 93, a longtime resident of the Banks community died, Sunday evening, March 6, 2011 at his home


      Recitation of the Holy Rosary and Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Friday, March 11, 2011 at the St Francis Catholic Church; 39135 NW Harrington Rd. in Roy, OR Family and friends are invited to attend a reception following the Mass to be held in the Parish Hall. Rite of Christian Burial and Vault interment will take place at 2:00 PM on Friday; March 11, 2011 at the St Francis Catholic Cemetery in Roy.


      Bob was born on November 3, 1917 in Banks, OR. He was one of11 children born to William and Minnie (Vanderzanden) VanDomelen. He was raised on the family farm and attended grade school at St Francis Catholic Grade School in Roy, OR. He enlisted into the US Army and served his country in Africa and Italy where Bob was wounded and received a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged after four years of services as a corporal.


      He met his future wife, Patricia Hermens, at a wedding dance in Roy, OR. They soon began seeing each other and were married 9 months later on June 27, 1946. Following their marriage the couple bought a piece of property down the road from Bob’s parents farm and built a small home with lumber salvaged from an old one room school house. With a growing family and a need for better amenities they began building their current home in the spring of 1953, where they have lived since.
      Bob was a farmer and grew strawberries, grains and livestock. In 1959 he was employed at Tektronix and worked there for 22 years before retiring in 1981.
      Among his interests, he enjoyed gardening, golf and clam digging. He also was a woodworker, loved the outdoors, fishing and traveling. In his youth Bob and his brothers played baseball. He and Bud played on a State Championship team, the Banks Pioneers, in 1949. Bob was also a good cook, canned fruits and vegetables with his wife and enjoyed dancing.


      He is preceded in death by his parents and 6 siblings.


      Survivors include his loving wife; Patricia, six children and their spouses; Richard VanDomelen of Forest Grove, Linda and Roger Jensen of Portland, OR, Shirley Kalhar of Troutdale, OR, Beverly and Mike Vandecoevering of Canby, OR, Lois and Rick miller of Portland, OR, Bill and Vicky of Banks, OR, four siblings; Bernard and Tony VanDomelen, Mildred Bernards, Dorothy Neilson 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.


      The family suggests donations in Bob’s Name to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School
