Schmidt, Arthur L. Arthur L. Schmidt, age 88, lifelong resident of New London, died Thursday, February 8, 2007, at the Fox River Assisted Living, following a lingering illness with Parkinson's Disease. Art was born on November 3, 1918, in Hollandtown, Wisconsin, son of the late Henry and Elizabeth (Jackels) Schmidt. On January 26, 1946, he married Marian Schmidt in Sherwood. His bride of 59 years preceded him in death on August 14, 2005. Art and his wife Marian owned and operated Schmidt's Keenway Grocery Store in New London for 33 years.
He was a faithful member of Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, teaching religious education in the 1960s, serving as financial secretary, and a trustee for many years and was also involved in the church picnic and many other church activities. He was a member of the Father Herb Council #1797. He was a Boy Scout leader and a volunteer for the New Lass Scholarship. He also delivered meals on wheels. Art was a WWII Veteran and a member of the Norris Spencer Post American Legion of New London.
He is survived by four daughters: Kay (Lewis) Bellile, Appleton; Joan (Douglas) Terrell, Sandpoint, ID; Mary Jo (Timothy) Sullivan, Racine; Sue (Christopher) Crosby, De Ridder, LA; seven grandchildren: Katy (Justin) Sommer, Whitefish Bay; Ben (Lisa) Bellile, De Pere; Emily Terrell, Vancouver, British Colombia; Amanda and Sarah Crosby, De Ridder, LA; Maggie and Will Sullivan, Racine; three great-grandchildren, Kylee and Luke Sommer and Bryanna Bellile; a brother, Leonard (Lori) Schmidt, Brillion; two sisters: Lucille (Dan) Spencer, Stockton, MO, and Lorraine (Donald) Brink, Ephraim; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: George (Vita) Schmidt, Chicago, IL; Florian (Donna) Schmidt, Sherwood; Madella Jacob, Menasha; Lorraine (Sandy) Rehfeldt, Appleton; Agnes Schmidt Smarinski, Menasha; Jackie Schmidt, Neenah and Evelyn Schmidt, Sherwood; step-brothers and sisters: Ralph (Grace) Schmidt, Brillion; Ann Marie (Frances) Kempen and Evelyn Schmidt, Brillion.
He was preceded in death by step-mother Mary Schmidt, Clarence (brother) and Jeanne Schmidt; Rosemary (Sister) and Hilard Brantmeier, Andrew (brother) Schmidt; brothers in-law: Julius Schmidt, Leander Schmidt, Paul Schmidt; Stephen Jacob and Gerald Schmidt.
The Funeral Mass for Art will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 12, 2007, at the Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in New London, with the Rev. David Lewis officiating. Interment will be in the Most Precious Blood Parish Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cline & Hanson Funeral Home in New London, on Sunday, February 11, 2007, from 4-8 p.m. Military rites will be held at 6:45 and a 7 p.m. prayer service will follow. Friends may also call at the church on Monday, from 9 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to support senior services.
