- Kathleen A. VanVreede, Mosinee, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at Ministry Saint Clare's Hospital, Weston.
Kathleen was born in Brokaw to Christian and Amelia (Schneck) Holzem. She was the oldest of 12 children. In 1944, she married Charles "Wib" Pierce at St. James Church in Wausau. Together, they had five children. In 1971, Wib died in a tragic car accident.
In 1976, Kathleen married Eugene VanVreede at St. Matthew Church in Wausau. She and Eugene moved to Appleton where they resided for five years before moving to Sawyer Lake, northeast of Antigo.
Kathleen was first and foremost a master homemaker who took great pride in canning, baking, knitting, needlework and especially sewing, which she began at a very early age. She worked for United Cloak Shop where she did alterations for 18 years. She especially loved sewing for her girls, crafting gowns and even prom dresses with matching purses. She also worked in Group Claims for the former Employers Insurance, where she retired in 1976.
Survivors include her children, Karl (Erna) Pierce, Canyon City, Colo., Charlotte (Richard) Meadows, Rothschild, Colleen (Neil) O'Brien, Kronenwetter, and Cynthia (Gary) Wenzel, Kronenwetter; daughter-in-law, Pam Pierce, Guatemala; two stepsons, Doug VanVreede, Minnesota, and Mark VanVreede, Appleton; six sisters, Marcella (Art) Berndt, Wausau, Anna Mae (Jim) Babicky, Weston, Arlene Loss, Wausau, Cecilia (Robert) Gwidt, Schofield, Christine (Roger) Sefton, Texas, and Sandra Dorshak, Weston; three brothers, Marvin (Marge) Holzem, Wisconsin Dells, Alex (Barbara) Holzem, Wausau, and Charles (Gert) Holzem, Rothschild; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Pierce; second husband, Eugene VanVreede; son, Kendall Pierce; two brothers, Gregory Holzem and Donald Holzem; and two brothers-in-law, Art Berndt and James Babicky.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, at St. Mark Catholic Church, 602 Military Road, Rothschild. The Rev. Allan Slowiak will officiate. Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the church.
