Schumacher, Agnes S. Schumacher, Agnes S. "Mom" took the Lord's hand on Thursday, June 15, 2006, to join her beloved husband of 57 years. She passed to her heavenly reward with her loving family at her side in her home where she has lived for the past 70 years. Her husband John was born in this house in 1902. She loved that old farmhouse. She at one time stated "the only way they're going to get me out of here is on a buckboard with my feet up." Mom, you got your wish. With the loving care of her family, especially her granddaughters Joell and Lisa, her request was fulfilled. Mom was a farmer's wife, a woman who knew the true meaning of hard work. At Daddy's side, she worked from sun up to sun down whether it be in the house or barn or fields. She cooked, she baked (8 loaves of bread every other day) along with pastries to make anyone's mouth water; she sewed, she gardened, she canned vegetables, fruits or anything one could put into jar. For years she sewed carpet rags for St. John's Mission Club. She was a lifelong member of the St. Elizabeth Society. Her hands were always busy. Mom learned early the value of being frugal. Coming from a family of 14 children in Menomonie, Wis. to Little Chute to seek work, she knew she had to make her own way. For four years she worked as a nanny for the Herb Gollner family in Menasha. While here, she met the love of her life, our Daddy, John, at the Cinderella Ballroom in Appleton. Their first dance was to "The Blue Skirt Waltz" and for 57 years they danced, played, worked hard and raised their family on the Schumacher family farm. It was not an easy life. In the early years, they lived in three rooms upstairs in the farmhouse with four children and had no electricity or plumbing. She did all of this with true grit and always a smile on her face. Complaining was not in her nature, she always saw the bright side of everything. She loved people, she was forever giving and helping anyone and everyone. One of our favorite memories occurred in the 1950's. It was common to see Mexican migrant workers in the neighbor's fields and Mom would have us kids go into our dresser drawers to "donate" our clothes to "those poor children." That, along with baskets of food must surely have been welcomed by these workers. Mom was the epitome of goodness, kindness, generosity, wisdom and grace. She continually taught and showed us what true Christianity is. She was a deeply spiritual woman. The world is truly a better place for having had her in it. Mom also loved to have fun. She loved children, people, visits and most especially playing Sheepshead. We have dubbed her the "Sheepshead Queen". And for good reason, she played a mean game, right up to the end. She was one "sharp" lady and so much fun to be with. We've had Mom for 94 years and we're grateful. Our tears today are selfish tears, we grieve for our loss. She leaves a huge hole in each of our hearts. She was a grand lady, a beautiful woman, wife, mother, grand and great grand mother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend. Mom, we will love and miss you forever. You were a caretaker to the end.
