- Ray Vande Castle Cause of Death: Arterio-sclerosis REFN: 12 DIED SATURDAY, AUGUST 6, 1932 AT 10:00 A.M. AT HOME OF ARTERIO-SCLEROSIS AGE 46 death notice stated married in Spring 1911, not Oct. 1911. From newspaper death notice: "Ray Vande Castle, for over twenty-one years a linotype operator in the office of the Journal-Democrat, passed away at his home on Reid street last Saturday forenoon. He had been at his usual post in the office up to a week ago Friday; his death was the result of arterio-sclerosis. Mr. Vande Castle was born in De Pere on August 31, 1886, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Vande Castle. He started out as a typesetter in the office of his father, publisher of the De Pere Standard and other publications,later he nastered the operation of the linotype in the office of the Green Bay Gazette, and in May, 1911, entered the employ of the publisher of the Journal-Democrat in which he continued up to within a few days of his untimely death. That same spring he married Miss Mary VandeWalle who with seven children mourns the loss of a truly Christian husband and father. The children are: Paul, Leo (Frater Bede, O. Praem.), Edward, Patricia, Louis, Jerome, and Mary. He is also survived by two brothers, Rev. Henry Vande Castle of Askeaton, and Louis Vande Castle of Manitowoc, and three sisters, Mrs. S.H. Gerke of De Pere, and Agnes and Mrs. Otto Holz of Green Bay. Mr. Vande Castle was one of the trustees of St. Boniface church and was a past chief ranger of St. Norbert court, C.O.F. He was a faithful, efficient, industrious and loyal employe whose place it will be difficult to fill. The Journal-Democrat office was closed during the funeral, employers and employes attended the last rites and two of his fellow-workers acted as pallbearers. He was buried from St. Boniface church Tuesday forenoon. Rev. Henry Vande Castle of Askeatonwas celebrant at a solemn requiem high mass, assisted by Rev. T.C. Alger, O. Praem., as deacon, Rev. Jos. J. Kools as subdeacon and Rev. N. Rank of Sturgeon Bay as master of ceremonies. Other clergy in the sanctuary were Rt. Rev. B.H. Pennings, abbot, Msgr. P.A. VanHeyster, Rev. E.J. Lemieux of Oneida, Rev. J. Schaefer of Custer, Rev. D.F. Hurley, Rev, D.E. Rondou, Rev. M.S. Killeen, and Fraters Ferdinand, Albert, Damian and Bede. The church was crowded with friends and relatives of the well-known De Pere man, including delegations of the Holy Name society and St. Norbert's court, C.O.F. The pallbearers were J.A. Creviere, Jos.. Smits, John Vercauteren, Al. DeRuyter, John C. Stengel and Neil Quatsoe. There were many floral and spiritual offerings and interment was in Mt. Calvary cemetary. Among those who came from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Louis Vande Castle of Manitowoc, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Holz and daughter Bernice, Miss Agnes Vande Castle and Mr. and Mrs. Syl. Vande Wande Walle of Green Bay, Math. Martens and daughter Elizabeth, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Martens and Harry Martens of Coleman. Mr. and Mrs. George Martens of Stevens Point, Mr. and Mrs. JOhn Bushman of Appleton, Mrs. Jos. Knaapen and son James of Algoma, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Vande Walle of Nichols, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Vande Walle and family of Sturgeon Bay, Andrew Haag of Lemars, Iowa, Mrs. J. Simonet of two Rivers and Miss Jennie Cox of Askeaton. Friday night supper, vegetarian spaghetti with olive oil (meatless Friday with all of the priests) wine, wife would drink Manhattans and priests martinis. Sue would be complaining on an early tape recorder about Uncle Louie's deer shooting. Helen would be gossiping. 1948.
