- Accident Near Kaukauna Kills Donald Fassbender, Jerome, Donald VanAbel
Two members of the Hollandtown Volunteer Fire Department and a 16-year-old Kaukauna High School youth riding with the fireman to a brush fire four miles south of Kaukauna Sunday were injured fatally when a 1,350 gallon water tank slammed forward into the truck cab after a collision with a second fire truck.
Dead are: Donald L Fassbender, 25, a volunteer fireman for four years,
Jerome D. Van Abel, 47, a charter member of the fire department with 10 years service, and
Donald N. Van Abel, 16, his son, who was a passenger on the truck driven by Fassbender. The youth was a senior at Kaukauna High School.
Coroner's Report
Outagamie County Coroner Bernard H. Kemps said Fassbender and the older Van Abel were killed almost instantly. The youth died at Kaukauna Community Hospital several hours after the accident. He never regained consciousness, Kemps said.
Sheriff Calvin Spice said today he is continuing to investigate the accident and interviewing possible witnesses to the triple tragedy. The deaths are the 21st, 22nd and 23rd in Outagamie County from highway accidents this year.
Spice said an attempt is being made to identify the driver of a car which failed to yearld to the fire engine's emergency siren and red light, forcing the lead fire truck to come to a stop. When the lead truck stopped, the second truck, a 1957 Ford with a water tank mounted in the rear, slammed into the rear of the lead truck. The water tank twisted from its mountings, slid into the metal cab and crushed the three occupants, authorities theorized.
Authorities' Account
County authorities gave this account of the accident:
Three trucks from the department had been summoned to the Lawrence Madson farm, route 3, Kaukauna on Outagamie county Trunk KK at the Calumet-Outagamie County line.
