Mrs. Anna Schommer Murphy [Anna Van Asten
Formerly of Freedom, age 94, died Wednesday evening at St. Paul Nursing Home, Kaukauna, after a brief illness. She was born Octobe 25, 1889 in Green Bay. She married George T. Schommer in 1916. She operated Schommers Tavern in Freedom until 1944. She married Patrick Murphy in 1944, residing in Freedom until 1973. She was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom, was active in parish affairs, and served as secretary of the Christian Mother's Society, in which she was a member, a member of St. Therese Society and Third Order of St. Francis.
Survivors include three daughters and sons in-law, Sister George Ann Schommer, Escanaba, Michigan; Lorraine and Lloyd Hagen, Neenah; Georgiana and Leo Casey, Appleton; two step daughters, Mrs. Bob [LaVern] Guerts, Freedom; and Mrs. Merle [Rosemary] Romenesko, Walworth, Wisconsin; two sons and two daughters in-law, Florian and Lorrain Schommer, Shawano; Russell and Betty Schommer, Detroit, Michigan; and two step sons, John Murphy, Black Creek; and Ralph Murphy, Freedom; 21 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, George T. Schommer 1936, and her second husband, Patrick Murphy in 1969, three brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom with the Rev. Leander Nickel and Deacon Don Newhouse officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Fargo Funeral home from 4 to 9 p.m. friday and after 9 a.m. Saturday until the time the cortege leaves for the church. There will be a prayer service at 8 p.m. Friday.
