- C. Bernard Cohen, 90, 3838 Church View Ct., Greenleaf, former rural Denmark resident, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at his residence. He was born Sept. 29, 1923, on the family farm in Morrison. Bernard was the second child of William and Lucy Daley Cohen. He married the former Joyce Matzke on Sept. 25, 1948, at St. Francis Catholic Church in De Pere. Bernard farmed until 1949 and then became a truck driver. When television came to the Green Bay area he became trained in TV repair and sales of the Motorola brand for Denmark Farm Equipment. In 1968, he opened his own store in Langes Corners, and delivered many families their first television. Bernard succeeded his father as town Assessor in Morrison in 1949. After moving to Langes Corners, he ran for Assessor in New Denmark and was elected 21 times continuously from 1965 until 2006. He was a member of the Wisconsin Towns Association. Bernard was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus since 1964, serving two terms as Grand Knight, District Deputy and delegate to the National Convention. A member of St. Mary parish in Glenmore, he was a devoted Christian, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was proud of his Irish heritage, with most of his ancestors coming from County Clare, Ireland. Bernard was a lifelong Packer fan, and enjoyed meeting people and good conversation.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; sons, Michael (Nancy) Cohen, Kevin (Janet) Cohen, Charles "Chuck" (Sara) Cohen, and daugher-in-law, Lisa Cohen; grandchildren, Lee (Keri) Steffens, Molly Steffens, Bridget Cohen, Tara (Matthew) Mullarkey, Kelli Cohen, Justin LeBreck, Katie (Alex) Aicher, Brendan, Sean, and Aidan Cohen; great-grandchildren, Brock and Kaitlyn Steffens. He is further survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary (Cohen) Kane, Blossom Krueger, Germaine Matzke, Ken and Delores Matzke, Rosella Schroeder, Gloria and Roger Bougie; and by many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. Bernard was preceded in death by one daughter, Connie Steffens; one son, John Cohen; a grandson, Jon Steffens; son-in-law, Don Steffens; a brother, Robert; two sisters, Catherine (Jack) Stedl, and Doris (Giles) Kane; and by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rollie and Ethel Matzke, Milton Krueger, June and Ed Collins, Robert Matzke, and Rollie Schroeder.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 28, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Glenmore, with the Reverend William O'Brien officiating, with burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, town of Franklin. Relatives and friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Knutson-Cotter Funeral Home, in Denmark. There will be a 7:30 p.m. parish wake service led by Father Bill. Visitation will continue after 9 a.m. on Monday at the church, until the time of service at 10:30 a.m. A memorial fund has been established in his name. Bernard's family would like to express a very special thank you to the entire wonderful staff at Wayside Parkview Estates and Unity Hospice for the great care given to dad, and for helping us during this time.
