    • Helen G. Gevaert, 88, Ashwaubenon, went to Heaven to be with her Lord on Monday, Nov. 22, 2010. She was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Marinette, Wis., to the late Charles and Agnes (Doran) McCrory. Helen was a graduate of Marinette High School, Class of 1940. Following graduation, she moved to Green Bay and worked for Kraft Foods. Her love for traveling brought her to Chicago and later to Sacramento, Calif., where she worked for the U.S. State Dept. during World War II. After the war, Helen returned to Green Bay and met Ted Gevaert, who she later married on July 2, 1949. In addition to raising five children, Helen worked at H.C. Prange Co. for many years.

When Ted was diagnosed with Alzheimer's 28 years ago, Helen helped establish the Northeast Wisconsin Alzheimer's Chapter. She then served on the Board of Directors and later worked in the office. After Ted died in 1992, she traveled to Hawaii with her longtime friend, Bea Moore. She also went to Spain and Las Vegas. Helen's independent spirit and love of driving often led her to her son, Rick's home in Oklahoma, where she rode horses and fished. Helen's favorite pastime was fishing, especially with her sons and grandsons. She would often say, "Just get me a pole and set me by the water and I'll be just fine." Her other interests included knitting, crocheting, square dancing, bowling and playing cards with her friends. Her last years were spent sewing beautiful baby quilts for future great-grandchildren.

Helen is survived by her five children and their spouses, Barbara Sherman, Black River Falls; Rick and Jo Gevaert, Pawhuska, Okla.; Mike and Ann Gevaert, Green Bay; Steve and Amy Gevaert, De Pere; Gary and Debbie Gevaert, Suamico; six grandchildren, Dustin Sherman, Black River Falls; Angie and Mike Rusk, Green Bay; Molly Gevaert and Marcus Gevaert, Green Bay; Mallory Gevaert, Chicago; Rhianon Gevaert, Little Suamico; a special granddaughter, Natisha Hiedeman, Green Bay; a very special great-granddaughter, Marisa Rusk; her sister, Ruth (McCrory) Payne, De Pere; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Gevaert, Rosalyn Gevaert, both of Green Bay; many nieces, nephews and special longtime friends, Bea Moore and Betty Lemke. In addition, Helen and Ted were foster parents for over 30 newborn babies.
