    • DEATH OF A PIONEER
Died - At his residence in Dundas, Friday, July 6th, Mr. Elias Beach. Mr. Beach was born in Mendum, N. Y., 1802 and was consequently 81 years of age. He came to Green Bay in the spring of 1849, where he lived but a short time when he moved to the town of Woodville, Calumet County and where he continued to reside until his death. He was a shoemaker by trade, but did not follow the business very long after moving West. At the time of his coming to the town of Woodville, the country in the vicinity was one great wilderness, and there were no other settlers within many miles; but with the energy of the pioneer of those days, he with the assistance of his sons soon cleared a fine farm and built a large house, which for many years was used as a tavern and was well known throughout the state as Beach's Hotel.
Before railroads were built, most of the traveling between Fond du Lac and Green Bay was done on what is known as the "Military Road," and this hotel was situated about midway between these two cities. So popular did this house become that travelers in this section of the state, when possible, always made it a stopping place, and many times would go miles out of their way to enjoy the hospitality of the family of Mr. Elias Beach.
The deceased was the father of a large family of children, eight of whom are now living, viz: George M. Beach, of Brillion; Sam. D. and J. E. Beach at the old homestead in Woodville; Mrs. F. H. Magdeberg and Ed. Beach of Milwaukee; S. H. Beach and Mrs. M. W. Kellogg of this village and Mel. S. Beach of Denver, Colo.
The funeral was held on Sunday last, at the old home, and was attended by a very large number of relatives and friends, among whom was the widow and several of his children. The funeral sermon was preached by Elder Phillips, of Wrightstown. The death of Mr. Beach is the first which has occurred in this family for upwards of fifty years. Several years ago the deceased gave to the Lutheran society of Woodville a plat of ground on which to build a church and to use as a cemetery, reserving several lots for a family burying ground. In this place his remains were interred.
His life has been a long and useful one, and though he had seen many hardships and sickness, his greatest sufferings were during his last sickness, which commenced about two years ago and continued until his death. Being always of a kindly disposition, he made many friends who will always hold his memory very dear and will sincerely mourn his death. - Kaukauna Times.
