    • APPLETON - Thomas J. Flatley, 78, formerly of Waupun, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at Appleton Health Care Center in Appleton. Tom was born March 13, 1931, in Kenosha, the son of Leo and Helen (nee: D'Arcy) Flatley. On November 16, 1957, he married Kathleen Smith in Racine. Following their marriage, the couple resided in the Racine/Kenosha area until moving to Waupun in 1972. Tom attended St. Norbert College and later Marquette University. He entered the United States Army in 1952 and served in the Korean War, where he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge. Tom was Manager of Capital Insurance in Waupun for 25 years. In 2006, he moved to Appleton. Tom was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Waupun, where he was also a member of its Knights of Columbus. He was a member of American Legion Post 210 in Waupun and a past member and past President of the Waupun Kiwanis Club. Tom and his family owned the Flatley Cottage on North Lake in Spread Eagle, where he spent his summers for the past 60 years. Tom is survived by a son, Tom D. (Maureen) Flatley of Neenah; two daughters, Kelly (Rich) Vander Heiden of Appleton and Patty (Steve) Soderberg of St. Paul, Minn.; four grandchildren, Amy, Brian, Michael, and Mary Pat; a sister, Eileen Scott of Iron Mountain, Mich.; a brother, Dr. James (Millie) Flatley of Vero Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen in 1994; and a sister, Jeanne in 1938. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 3, 2009, at 12 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Waupun with Rev. John Schmitz officiating. Burial will follow at Springvale Cemetery in the Town of Springvale, where American Legion Post 210 of Waupun will provide Military Honors. Friends and relatives may call on the family on Thursday at the Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home in Waupun from 5 until 7 p.m. with a Wake service at 6:45 p.m. and on Friday at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of service. The family wishes to thank the Appleton Health Care Center for their loving care of their father during his stay.
