    • Sir Thomas Philipps, of Picton, Pembs; Esquire of the Body to Henry VII, knighted 1513, Sheriff of Pembs 1516; married by Oct 1491 Joan, daughter and coheir of Henry Dwnn (died 1469) of Picton Castle, Pembs, whose ancestor, Sir John Wogan, of Wiston, lived temp. Henry III and married the daughter and heiress of Sir William Picton, of Picton, whose ancestors came to Dyfed with Arnulph de Montgomery (first Norman conqueror of Dyfed) and was granted the manor and castle of Picton, and [Sir Thomas] died 1520, leaving [Sir John Philipps, the eldest son, plus the Philipps/Philips/Phillips family, Baronets of Picton & Viscounts of St Davids] [Burke's Peerage]

      --------------------------------

According to Burke's Peerage Sir Thomas' father was Philip ap Maredugg, who died in or after 1441. This would make Sir Thomas knighted at 72, married to produce his eldest son at 50, Sheriff of Pembs at 75, and dead at 79. All possible, but very unlikely. All those dates are based on Thomas being born in the year his father died. Thus I am adding a generation between Thomas and his supposed father Philip.

I believe that there are probably other missing generations in the Burke's Peerage ancestry of Philip ap Maredudd, although it is not apparent which ones. The average span of years between generations in the ancestry is about 35. Most generational spans are 25 - 30 years, and less if you are speaking of lineages of mostly eldest sons, which this is.

----The following is copied from Richard Ripley, World Connect db=verdego, rootsweb.com---- ----who researched/developed the ancestry for Michael Phillips and Barbara Pierce---------------

This family are owners of Picton Castle in Wales. They retain a Royal title, and a Coats of Arms obtained from King Richard II some years before. They are known to spend part of each year in the Royal Court at London, where marriages and the birth of children can be noted in the files in this family tree, and part of each year at the castle in Wales, as well as in various estates in Shropshire and Carmethan, near the castle.

The Wogan line of Picton ended in an heiress who married Owain Dwnn, and the Dwnns ended in an heiress, Jane, who in the late 15th century married Sir Thomas Philipps of Cilsant, esquire to the body of Henry VII. The Cilsant family, which held extensive lands in West Carmarthenshire was descended from a late 11th century magnate named Cadifor Fawr. Cadifor's great-grandson, Aaron ap Rhys, took part in the Third Crusade, became a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre, and is said to have added the golden collar and chain to the back of the lion rampart which is the insignia of the Philipps family. The Philippses have held Picton Castle since the days of Sir Thomas.
