    • Wounded by exploding artillery shell at Battle of Weldon Railroad.
      Samuel Girrard the father of 18 children was born of parents of French decent, in Rome, New York, in 1816. At the age of 19 he married Esther Davis of Charlestown, Mass, who was then 15 years of age. The marriage took place in Charlestown 2 March 1835. After residing there for a few years they moved to the Niafara Falls where they were employed as interpreters by one of the hotel managers. They next moved to the vicinity of Buffalo where Samuel was engaged as a foreman in the construction of the Erie Canal. In 1847 they moved to Wisconsin. Samuel was badly wounded in the civil war. He then drew a pension from the Government.
