- Virgil Clement Thomson, 89, a lifelong resident of the Coleman area, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 4th.. Virgil was born June 21st, 1927 on the home farm East of Coleman to the late Albert Thomson, Sr. and Clementine (Vanden Branden) Thomson.
Virgil started his education attending Victory School, the school was named such as it was built after WWI. He was a 1944 graduate of Coleman High School at the age of sixteen.
Virgil met the love of his life and married Lorraine Panske on June 16, 1956 in Walsh, Wisconsin.
Jobs were hard to find during World War II and, after high school, he decided to stay and work on the family farm while also working for Coleman Elevator Company. He purchased the home farm in 1952.
In 1958 he decided to take a job as an agent with American Family Insurance, he had a growing family and also worked at the Coleman Canning Company to supplement his income.
In 1963 he became a substitute rural mail carrier, which eventually lead to a full-time position, prompting him to sell his insurance agency in 1980. Virgil retired as a rural mail carrier in 1988. He and Lorraine were finally able to take some long-deserved travel and they enjoyed trips to Alaska and wintered in Florida for 13 years.
Virgil was involved in the community, was a long time contributor to the Catholic Church community, served as President of the Coleman School Board, was a member of the National Rural Letter Carriers' Association and also helped lead a local Parkinson's chapter to support those suffering from the disease. He always had an upbeat attitude, sharing his wit and humor. He was a giving and caring person, there to lend an ear to listen or a shoulder on which to cry.
After 58 happy years together, Lorraine passed away in September 2014. Today they are again dancing together as they did the day they met at the Rendezvous in Crivitz in 1955.
He is survived by his six loving and caring children, Wayne (Patty), Wausau, Julie (David) Overman, Marinette, Joette (Jack) Koronkiewicz, Peshtigo, Karen (Craig) Thomson-Dickman, Suamico, Bruce (Brandon), Orlando, FL, and Mark (Nicole), Suamico. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren Matthew, Emilee and Stephanie, Derek and Jamie, Kristin, Allan and Staci, Megan and Brenden, Ryleigh, and Dylan, Asia, Syndie and Mitchel and 11 great grandchildren, in-laws, Helen Thomson, Carol Thomson, Jane (Ray) Walters, Judy (Kenneth) Beyer, Marlene (Larry) Roetzer and Ellie Panske, many nieces, nephews and his special friends Michele Randall, Rob, Becky and Bitsy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Vincent, Lawrence, Earl, Raphael, Walter, and Albert, Jr.; his sisters Elsie, Sylvia and infant sister Loretta. As well as many other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
We would like to express a special Thank You to the nursing staff at Bellin, Dr. Heyka, Dr. Hudson. Ryan MacDonald, and the Coleman paramedics for their compassionate care and concern they showed to our loved one.
Family and friends may call Tuesday, February 7th from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. at St. Anne's Catholic Church, Coleman, with Father Bob Karuhn officiating.
