      Age 76, died peacefully Tuesday, July 23, 2002 at home with his family by his side following a courageous battle with PSP. He was born February 21, 1926 in Appleton the son of the late Joseph and Agnes (Hoffman) Quella. He grew up in Appleton. He served in the US Navy during World War II at which this time he began corresponding with the future love of his life, Elaine Josephs. They were married April 16, 1947. Rich successfully ran the family grocery business, Quella's Food Market. Later he also owned and operated the 400 Bar. For a number of years, Rich and Elaine traveled south in the winter while he worked construction and golfed. Rich was an avid golfer and a member of Fox Valley Golf Club for 50 some years. In 1976 he was named NEWGA Man of the Year. He also coached boys' basketball and enjoyed bowling. He served as a Volunteer Firefighter in the Town of Buchanan and was a member of the Leo Van Roy Post 265 of the American Legion in Darboy. He loved to garden and his family, friends, and those in need reaped the benefits of his fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Following retirement, Rich and Elaine enjoyed traveling.

      Above all else, what he most wanted to be remembered for is that he cared for and loved his wife of 55 wonderful years, Elaine and their children: Kathleen (Robert) Dolezal, Cambridge, Minnesota and their children, Katrina (Hans) Mersinger, Maryrose, and Theresa Christine (James Sr.) Eisch, White Lake, Wisconsin and their children, Colleen (Tim) O'Connor, James Jr., Jeremy, and Joseph (Crystal) Eisch and Rich's great-grandchildren: Taylor Sherman-Eisch and Cassandra Eisch Joseph Quella, Kaukauna and his children, Stephanie, Michael, Stacey, and Shari Quella Rebecca Van Heuklon (special friend Denis Van Zeeland), Kaukauna and her children, Kerri Van Heuklon (special friend Andy Hah), and Kelly (Jason) Kelderman Richard A. (Erin) Quella, De Pere and their children, Heidi, Holli, Ryan, and Robyn Nancy (Dan) Christenson, Appleton and their children, Jacque (Dave) Bootz, Katie, Andy, and Zach Christenson Gail Wians (special friend Bruce St. Arnold), Niagra, Wisconsin and children, Amanda, Jessica, and Angela Wians four brothers and a sister-in-law: Tom, Ken, Bill, and Ray (Marilyn) Quella two sisters and a brother-in-law, Joan Reitzner and Margie (Bud) Kangas.

      Rich is preceded in death by three sisters-in-law: Millie, Suzie, and Cookie Quella a brother-in-law, Arnold Reitzner.

      A celebration of life will be at 12 (NOON), Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 222 East Fremont St., Appleton with Father Norm Krutzik officiating. Military rites, conducted by the Leo Van Roy Post 265 of the American Legion, will immediately follow services at church. Burial will be in Holy Name Cemetery, Kimberly. Friends may call directly at church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund has been established in his name. Boettcher Family Funeral Home, Kaukauna is assisting the family.

      Rich loved people and we will always remember him for his love of life, playful spirit, ready smile, helping hands and unselfish generosity. He was a man of few words, but great wisdom, who will be missed by his family, numerous friends, and relatives.
